Professor Jibrin Ibrahim, member, governing board of the Center for Democracy and Development (CDD), has said the planned palliative by the federal government could fail to serve its intended purpose just like that of COVID-19.

After the removal of subsidy, President Bola Tinubu had set up a committee to strategise on palliative to cushion the effect of the policy which led to pump price of fuel being jacked up times three.

Speaking on an ARISE TV programme, Prof Ibrahim said, “The palliative can easily become another fuel subsidy and we saw that very clearly during COVID-19, where the ministry of disaster management claimed they were paying billions of naira every month for school feeding.

And we knew that schools were closed, children were at home, and when that question was posed, the response was they had traced the people and students, and the question then became ‘how?’

“We do know that for the fuel subsidy, there have been a significant attempt to identify and map the poor in this country. This has been going over the last decade; they do have a list of very poor families. There is a history of conditional grant supports to families.

“I believe that when the audit is done on some of the palliatives paid during COVID-19, it will be discovered that it’s one of the greatest robberies in the history of this country. So, that’s the problem with with subsidy palliative.”

Earlier in April, the federal government under former President Muhammadu Buhari had said it had secured the sum of $800 million from the World Bank, as part of its post-subsidy palliative plans.

It had promised to pay N5,000 to 10 million poor households for six months as palliative for removing petrol subsidy after June.

Very true. Watch out for Tinubu and his Yoruba cabal who plan on privatising all the assets of the country to themselves.

That's obvious. What is palliative? Subsidy is the best palliative any government can offer. Making sure fuel is not stolen across border and monitoring the subsidy would have made life better for everyone. The so-called palliative is just an easier way of stealing undecided

Anything direct cash transfer* na scam full am..

The solution is to give tax rebate to civil servants..

Fund the Health Insurance Scheme on behalf of Nigerians and make Health services free for older citizens age 65 and above, Pregnant women, young teen and children ( age 0-16) ..with access to affordable and key medications

Make Primary education Free and COMPULSORY..

Rollout plenty land train buses..let them ply major routes across the Nation to reduce Tfare..

Atleast, we go feel am as citizens small.

Which one is palliatives again, is it this tinubu that's been hype on fixing the country?? undecided

Instead of improving the economy, you're thinking of useless palliatives that will be stolen by crooks in your government.

Tinubu is becoming as useless as buhari

Only a 4ool will expect anything good from palliative that politicians will rather keep in a warehouse and allow it decay than giving it to poor Nigerians......Why is Tinubu so much in a hurry to remove subsidy?......he did not even resume office before announcing the removal when everyone knows that we now have a very big local refinary that can soften the impact of the removal if it had been done like a year from now when out refinary would have been fully operational....... Tinubu can't wait to recoup the money he used in stealing the position he currently occupies grin...... Paying subsidy for another day extra is bad for business for him because subsidy is one of the spare part of the budget that he can recoup his money from grin

The best palliative for the poor is to lift the protectionist walls against the import of rice, poultry and second hand clothing..

Place a 20% importduty on them. This will not only bring down the price of food, but stem muggling of them into the country, anf raise 100s if billions of Naira for the government from mport duty.

Yes, it would hit poultry owners and rice farmers hard but creative destruction will eventually do its work. And again, the gain will be far greater than the loss

The sad thing about Nigeria is that here in our beloved country, the rot starts from the top.

From the presidential level to CBN governor to EFCC to IGP to University lecturers to state government officials to common POS operators. It's like everyone is fantastically corrupt.

May Nigeria rise again and be the giant of Africa, and the pride of every black person.

I can tell you that this man will make a good prophet bcs, Nigerian political vultures are laying in wait already, waiting for the palliative to be released before they pounce on it and devour all.

I remember the covid 19 scam from the minister of corruption and disaster woman.

I believe that when the audit is done on some of the palliatives paid during COVID-19, it will be discovered that it’s one of the greatest robberies in the history of this country. So, that’s the problem with with subsidy palliative.
