Some unidentified persons have allegedly stolen the recently reinstalled airfield lighting systems at the domestic runway 18/36L, Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.

The disappearance of the approach lighting systems raised security concerns in the busy airport.

A source who chose to remain anonymous had told Punch that those who stole the lighting systems took advantage of the closure of the runway for over three months - alleging that some FAAN workers connived with outsiders to steal the lighting equipments.

"The criminal took advantage of the closure to commit the crime. I cannot give the actual worth of the theft, but almost all the lighting was removed. The permanent secretary came around to see for himself the huge damage done. A lot of FAAN officials have been suspended,” the source said.

The incident has brought about the suspension of some heads of relevant departments at FAAN on the directives of the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Aviation, Dr Emmanuel Meribole.

According to a report by Punch, the source said, regular incursion and stealing of safety components at the airports are carried out by a syndicate, consisting of some workers of the agencies, who have access to the restricted areas and accomplices from outside.

We are a serious bunch of people
in this Nigeria..

Sabotage or vandalization of public
infrastructure should be death by firing
squad.... Simple❗️❗️

When there are no strong laws and
punishment, common criminals will keep
holding us to ransom, vandalising and
stealing anything they wish. Transformers,
NEPA lines, aluminum road guards rails,
street lights, manhole covers etc, etc.😐😐
