β€œYea you're on to XYZ blah blah blah, leave your message after the beep”

Will Nigerians ever get accustomed to using voicemail like Americans? Not likely.
I remember when mobile telecommunications newly came to Nigeria around 2003... We had M-Tel, Econet, then MTN came.

These telecommunications companies exploited us big time with high call rates and the fraudulent β€œPer Minute Billing”. If the call you made lasted for let's say 3 seconds, you would be billed for one minute regardless. It was that bad. πŸ‘Ž

They kept chousing us till Glo Network came through for us and introduced β€œPer Seconds Billing”, it was then the other telcos were forced to ditch the Per Minute Billing regime.

The exploitation by those telcos made Nigerians so β€œwoke” that they became too meticulous with their airtimes. They weren't even ready to explore the voicemail service for they saw it as a service invented by the telecommunications companies to chouse them.

Most Nigerians ignored the voicemail service like a plague. Telcos also fueled this apathy by placing new SIMs automatically on voicemail.

When your number wasn't reachable, your callers would be connected automatically to your voicemail which you never set up, hence you wouldn'tΒ  be able to access whatever voice message your callers left for you. People would query you and be like β€œI called you but you kept wasting my money”.

Dear telecommunications companies in Nigeria, now you know how you've rendered voicemail obsolete in Nigeria.
