Soludo Closing Anambra Newspaper To Use Premises For Family Business- Workers by TonyRazor(m): 5:01am On Jul 26, 2023 |
Our correspondent Soludo closing Anambra Newspaper to use premises for family business- workers Workers of the Anambra Printing and Publishing Corporation (ANPC), publishers of the National Light Newspapers have alleged that the state government is bent on closing the establishment because the governor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo, wants to use the premises for a family business. They said the governor wants to use the premises for an amusement park business that is personal to the Soludo family. It was gathered that angry workers who are facing threat of disengagement stated this during a meeting with the management of the organization where they were formally informed of the winding down of the corporation by the government as stated by two official memos. In a memo dated 21, July 2023 from the Office of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), addressed to the Managing Director/ Chief Executive Officer, ANPC, Sir Chuka Nnabuife asked him to start the winding down of the corporation activities that would lead to the disengagement of its staff. The memo addressed among other issues reasons for its closure as being moribund, economically unviable, and no longer fit for purpose. A follow-up letter dated 21 July 2023, was issued late that afternoon from the Office of the Head of Service (HoS) to Sir Nnabuife. The memo informed of the corporation shutdown with effect from 1st September 2023. The two memos which were read to the staff of the corporation in the meeting left staff in shock. They queried Soludo’s motivation for the closure of the corporation. The workers spoke of Gov. Hope Uzodinma of Imo State resuscitating the state-owned newspaper, Statesman. They also noted other state-owned newspapers running; and wondered why Soludo ,who workers’ expectation was to make the newspapers more viable and nationally accepted, had taken such extreme and harsh decision. They queried his supposedly SOLUTION mantra since he promised fixing anything broken during his electioneering as professor of economics. "He should make the place more viable and not shutting it down. It was gathered that despite several pleas from some cabinet members that Soludo remained adamant on destroying the paper’s legacy, the pride of the state. "Insiders informed that Gov. Soludo wants to use the corporation’s expansive premises for an amusement park, which they allegedly said was connected to his family but under the guise of the state government public-private initiative. "The National Light is Nigeria’s longest-running thriving state-owned newspaper. It prides itself on never being hiatus for once, compared to other states’ newspapers, it has been publishing for more than 30 years," the workers stated. |

Can a governor directly add to the growing unemployment in his state by winding down a government owed company without making alternative employment for the staff? Can only happen in Nigeria. Otti was happy to sack some persons few weeks ago because he claimed they're were illegally employed by the past administration. Soludo is no solution to Anambra! |

I don't support Otti sacking those workers. First and foremost they are all Abians. If they are laid off in their own state,is it another state that would absorb them? Secondly, laying off workers would only lead to more increase in crime for an idle mind is the devil's workshop. Soludo is working but the ordinary man in the streets of Anambra feels choked with some of his policies. He's kinda ruling Anambra with iron fists. |

Immatex: How many times have you seen “National light” newspaper talk more to read from it?? Even in Anambra state, you hardly find the newspaper, so why would government be wasting tax payers money on them when they are not productive You need to be there to understand the issues Fides newspaper own by Catholic Church is more acceptable and more reliable than the so called national light, even the one owned by the Umuchu billionaire is widely spread 1 Like |

Immatex: Are you talking from an economist point of view or emotional stand point? Soludo is an economist, remember this. How much is the newspaper company making? compared to the running cost and salaries that it gulps? How many people still reads the newspaper when 95% of the readers are online. It is almost dead. A recreational center is more appealing to the modern society and would add to the state tourism, attract more revenue and also employ more people. It is only natural that there will be an uproar when Dinosaur jobs are about to be scrapped to give way for something more mordern and sustainable in the long term view. 1 Like |

So that's why he should sack them without providing them alternative employment opportunities? So it economically better for them to be unemployed? You are amazingly annoying! |

Jcoleworld911: So making people with responsibilities to themselves and others unemployed sounds a brilliant idea to you folks? Did I say he shouldn't shutdown the place? But that news article gave no indication the government had plans to keep the redundant employees employed. There can never be a justification for making anyone unemployed. |

Immatex: Government can no longer keep up with their unproductive activities, the ministry generates nothing so why are they being paid?? If you care so much, provide jobs for them. Float a company and employ them |
