Former national chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and now senator representing Edo North senatorial district, Adams Oshiomhole was on Tuesday made to publicly apologise over his recent interview where he allegedly accused senators of the 9th Senate of looting their offices at the end of their tenure in June 2023.

Trouble started following a point of order moved by Senator Solomon Adeola (APC – Ogun West), saying his privilege was breached by Oshiomhole’s allegation.

He called on Oshiomhole to apologize to the Senate for saying senators looted their offices.

Senator Adamu Aliero (PDP – Kebbi Central) supported Adeola saying that Oshiomhole should apologize.

In the interview on Channels Television, Oshiomhole had said “I was shocked at the level of vandalization of properties of the national assembly. Televisions, carpets and senators chairs were carted away. People tell me that in the House of Reps too there was also this kind of vandalization”.

Following the revelation, Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Ali Ndume, through a point of order moved that the Senate should resolve into an executive session to deliberate on the “sensitive” matter.

However, when the motion to go into the closed-door session was put to voice vote, Senators opted that the matter be discussed in plenary by voting “nay”.

In his submission, the Deputy Senate President, Jibrin Barau, also intervened, explaining that all items in the offices of Senators depreciate to the tune of 25 percent and the tradition every four years is to give lawmakers the right of offer to purchase those items and if accepted, the lawmaker will either pay outright for the items or the funds are removed from their severance gratuity.

At this point, Senate President Godswill Akpabio called on Oshiomhole to approach the chair. After a brief talk with Oshiomhole, Akpabio called on Oshiomhole to state his own side of the matter.

Oshiomhole, in his submission, apologized for his comment saying he defended the Senate during his television interview under reference rather than indicting Senators of the 9th Senate of looting their offices. The uproar in the chamber later subsided after Senator Oshiomhole’s apology.
