Yestersay, June 25, there was a clash between the men of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) and Department of State Service (DSS) at the Federal High Court in Lagos.

Recall that the suspended Central Bank Governor Goodwin Emefiele was charged with illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. But, was given a N20 Million bail today at the court.

However, men of the DSS operatives attempted to re-arrest him, despite the court granting him bail.

As Emefiele’s defense worked on bail conditions, a fight erupted between the DSS and NCS over custody of the embattled CBN boss. This incident is one of many instances where Nigerian security operatives have reportedly clashed, raising concerns about the nation’s security system.

In this article, we take a look at three other occurrence where Nigerian security operatives clashed and why.

1. Clash between Soldiers and Policemen over IDP Food Distribution

In June 2016, a disturbing incident unfolded at the Borno State Government House when soldiers and policemen engaged in a shootout over food supplies designated for internally displaced persons (IDPs). The dispute erupted during the distribution of food items to IDPs in the area.

With an increasing number of IDPs relocating to Maiduguri, the state capital, for the chance to benefit from the aid, tensions escalated between the security personnel tasked with maintaining orderliness. The clash resulted in gunfire and the release of teargas canisters, causing injuries to several IDPs and a mobile policeman.

Thankfully, the intervention of a senior military official ultimately calmed the situation.

2. Clash between Police and NSCDC Personnel in Owerri Following a Traffic Accident

In April 2022, the Imo State Police Command issued a statement through its Public Relations Officer, CSP Michael Abatham, regarding the clash between the Police and NSCDC personnel in Owerri.

According to the police spokesman, the incident occurred when a Mobile Police Superintendent, identified as Ezenwanne Nonso, was driving in his car to the Imo Police Command Headquarters for an assignment. While approaching the Control Post roundabout, he encountered a heavy traffic jam, and drivers were trying to maneuver their vehicles to get through.

At this point, an NSCDC personnel, who was also in traffic behind the police officer, allegedly hit the Police Superintendent’s vehicle violently and started shouting, ordering him to remove his vehicle from the road. The police officer explained that he was equally trying to free himself from the traffic, but the NSCDC personnel reportedly slapped him hard and insulted him.

The situation escalated when the police officer identified himself as a Mobile Police Superintendent from the Owerri base. The NSCDC personnel allegedly slapped him again, and others joined in beating him. They seized the police officer’s phone and drove off with him still following them.

Upon arriving at the NSCDC office, the police officer demanded the return of his phone, but the NSCDC personnel refused, dragged him into their office, and continued to beat him. They also took his service pistol.

The police spokesman stated that the officer was held in their custody overnight without informing his police command, which is a standard practice in such situations. The following day, a search party was organized when the officer’s disappearance raised concerns due to the sensitive position he held.

When the police team arrived at the NSCDC command to inquire about the detained officer, the NSCDC personnel allegedly became hostile and even fired shots into the air. In response to the perceived threat, the Mobile Police Officers used teargas as minimal force to defend themselves, and the NSCDC personnel scattered, leading to a fight, and eventually, the rescue of the police officer.

3. Police and DSS Engage in Fierce Fight at Emir of Bauchi’s Palace

In October 2017, a fierce altercation erupted at the Emir of Bauchi’s palace between an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) from the Bauchi State Command and an official of the Department of State Services (DSS) who was assigned to the wife of the Governor of Nasarawa State, Hajia Mairo Al-makura.

The incident unfolded during a courtesy visit by the Northern Governors’ Wives Forum (NGWF) to the Emir of Bauchi, Dr. Rilwanu Suleiman Adamu.

The clash between the ACP and the DSS official occurred inside the emir’s palace while the Emir was already seated and receiving his guests. The dispute apparently began when the DSS operative asked that the vehicle of the Bauchi State Governor’s wife be parked properly, away from where Al-makura’s wife’s vehicle was already parked.

The police officer, dressed in his uniform, was displeased with the request from the plain-clothed DSS official and reportedly raised his voice at him. This led to an exchange of harsh words, with the DSS official also responding angrily to the police officer.

The situation escalated when some policemen, believed to be the ACP’s subordinates, joined in the altercation and allegedly attacked the DSS official, causing serious injuries.

Amid the chaos, a senior police officer intervened and took away the pistol belonging to the ACP to prevent any accidental shootings.
