Honestly, one of the reasons I will never return to live in Nigeria isn’t just about money. The quality of life for the money you earn is very low. In Nigeria, you’ll see rich people boasting with designer brands, using it to show that they have “arrived.” “Oh, I buy my clothes from H&M, I buy my clothes from Zara, I only wear originals,” and all that. But the funny thing is, those same designer clothes are very cheap here. H&M, Zara, and other well-known brands are affordable, even for people earning minimum wage. If you want, you can buy designer clothes every month without breaking the bank. Meanwhile, in Nigeria, those same clothes will cost millions, and sellers will hype them up, saying they’re “imported.” The real joke is that when these brands go on sale, they’re discounted by 75-80%. You can get a nice designer T-shirt for about 5,000 pesos (around 8,000 naira) and quality designer jeans for about 20,000 naira. What I don’t understand is that I had family members in Canada and the U.S. while growing up, and whenever they sent us clothes, they were always torn, tattered, and worn out. But now that I’m in Chile, if I ever travel back to Nigeria, even if I decide to go for second-hand clothes, I can easily fill up two Ghana-must-go bags with just 300,000 pesos worth of quality clothes. And yet, these same people will be telling us to stay back in Nigeria, claiming that “abroad is hard.” Well, I’m here now, and I can tell you abroad isn’t what they make it seem from Nigeria 4 Likes |
