Following the military coup in Niger Republic, democratic rule in the African region is under threat as about five (5) African countries are practicing military government currently.

However the Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas) has been on the front line in the restoration of democracy in Niger. The Ecowas Chairman, Sen. Bola Tinubu, the Nigerian President had delegated Ecowas peace delegation on a dialogue. The former Nigerian Head of States, Abdulsalam Abubakar and the Sultan of Sokoto had met with the Juntas, the ECOWAS Chief of Defence Staffs had met, ECOWAS had given an ultimatum which has elapsed.

The Northern Youth Assembly of Nigeria led by the Speaker Rt. Hon. Ibrahim Mohammed Lawal, held an extra ordinary seating to address the state of the nation.

Nigeria as a country is going through a lot right now, ranging from subsidy removal, internal security challenges, economic difficulties and the increasing food prices. we are calling on the government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to say no to war solution in Niger Republic. ECOWAS should continue on the diplomatic dialogue to resolve the crisis amicably.

Going into war with Niger Republic will affect about 6 States in the Northern Nigeria sharing borders with Niger Republic. We maybe having more refugee trooping into Nigeria, spending too much resources to sustain the war, there by compounding the Nigerian problems.

Of course Nigeria is the giant of Africa, and we need to live up to that expectation by playing the role of a big brother. But we must fight with our brain and not with our emotion.

Therefore, we must shield our sword and embrace dialogue, engagement and advocacy to let them understand why they cannot remain in power.

We sincerely commend ECOWAS and their efforts so far, we will continue to support and pray for the continuous peace in Africa.
