there are various aspects of fisheries that are profitable but table size or ( Melange) is not one of them. melange is raising fish that are not UpTo 1kg a table size is 1kg and above and u raise them for 4 to 6 and then sell. Why is it impossible to sell at a profit margin? It is because there's proliferation of farmers who enter the system with the erroneous assumption of making profit when they go into table size production. Halfway into the business, they go broke or discover that fish has stunted growth and may decide to wanna sell. buyers will force down the purchasing price and most desperate growers has no choice than to sell. ask yourself why somebody will wanna buy from you at a higher price when he can get it cheaper at the fish market?
your nightmare is when those selling at the fish market will be the one to com buy your fish (so pe OTI lo) your business is as good as dead. they give u ridiculous offer and u regret why u are in business. two months ago, former president Olusegun Obasanjo came out to say he is running at a loss in raising one kg table size. he said N1,400 isn't enough to raise a kg. the shocking thing is that 1kg is sold between N1300 to N1,600. it is rare to get 1,600 though. this tells you that table size is not the way to go.

Hatchery is good but it is labor intensive and require enough sensitivity. you need the technical know how but in the event that you don't have the technical know how but you still want to be involved in raising fish at a profitable margin which is very sensible and lucrative, there is still one more aspect you can go into which will yield optimal profit. it's this aspect am more interested in and focus on which in the event that you can't hatch, you can still profitably invest and get involved in the agricultural/fisheries value chain.
stay alert as I discuss that in my next article.
