Wife of the Lagos State governor reacts to the bill in the Senate seeking to legalise the profession.

Commercial sex trade is already a globally condemned practice; therefore, it will be demeaning for Nigeria to seek to legalise it now, said Abimbola Fashola, the wife of the Lagos State governor.

Fashola was reacting to a proposed bill seeking to legalise commercial sex in Nigeria, while briefing journalists about the forthcoming 11th National Women Conference, the annual conference of the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials (COWLSO).

Mrs Fashola is wrong. Commercial sex trade is not globally condemned. What is globally condemned is woman trafficking for whatever purpose which is usually for commercial sex trade. The right of commercial sex workers is absolutely protected in some countries due to human rights provisions which allow any one to be whoever he or she wants to be including professional pros-titution.

They are registered with the authority of the countries with contracts which explains the security of their payment, insurance for their health and protection against allĀ  possible hazards to their job. So where is it globally condemned?
