Between 2009 and 2011, about 13 million Nigerian youth will be requiring productive employment, a report compiled by the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, has said.

“Nigerian Youth Employment Action Plan” said the figure is alarming when set against the already high rates of unemployment and underemployment among the youth.

The report, which was compiled in December, 2008, said that administrative data show that Nigeria generates about 4.5 million new entrants into the labour market annually.

The figure is made up of people out of the school system (1 million) primary school leavers not proceeding to secondary school (2.2 million) secondary school leavers not proceeding to the tertiary level (1 million) and tertiary graduates (300,000)
