The defence counsel for suspended Central Bank of Nigeria governor, Godwin Emefiele, shielded him from journalists after his court session at the Federal High Court, Abuja, Thursday was adjourned.

Emefiele, who has been in detention since his suspension on June 9, 2023, was accused of conferring corrupt advantages on Yaro, a director in April 1616 Investment Ltd.

He was the only one who appeared in court on Thursday, which led to the postponed arraignment of the CBN leader due to the absence of the first and second defendants, who are allegedly ill.

After the court session, the embattled suspended apex bank chief could be seen dodging journalists who had already surrounded him while he received a call in the witness box.

Emefiele attempted to exit the courtroom with his head bowed but was advised against this by his lawyers who escorted him out through the court's backdoor.

The lawyers could be heard saying in Yoruba language, "Don't crawl, walk up straight."
