The recent case that happened at the Federal University of Technology, Akure today, losing a 500-level student. The Federal University of Technology, AKure, nestled in Ondo State, found itself shrouded in mourning on Friday as the news of a student's passing cast a shadow of sorrow over the institution.

Ayomide Akeredolu, a student within the university's walls, met a tragic end on Thursday evening. He collapsed within the confines of his hostel, his life slipping away shortly thereafter.
This heart-wrenching incident ignited an intense outpouring of grief and indignation among the student community. Accusations were directed at the institution, focusing on its perceived lack of concern for the well-being of its students and the allegedly dismal conditions of the school's health center.

Regrettably, the response from the institution, as conveyed by the Director of Corporate Communications, Mr. Adegbenro Adebanjo, only intensified the pain. In an official statement issued on that sorrowful Friday, the university distanced itself from responsibility, asserting that the student had already passed away before arriving at the health center.

The statement revealed that the student's lifeless body was brought to the school's medical facility, a disclosure that carried a somber finality. The director's words, etched into the statement, recounted the tragic sequence of events: "The (deceased) student was rushed to the health center at about 8:50 pm on Thursday, August 24, 2023. He was brought in dead. Efforts to resuscitate him through cardiopulmonary resuscitation and oxygen therapy proved abortive. He was subsequently taken to the UNIMED Teaching Hospital, Akure by the medical personnel on duty inside the university ambulance."

Personally, as a student of the university myself, I don’t believe it’s fully the university or clinic's fault as supposed by Other student. The student reactions to this as not been hard, Futa is known by all as a peaceful university, though there have been blockages of the university entrance.

Some students claim the parent of the deceased should sue the university and the deceased deserves justice. The rumor which I cannot affirm to be true was that the deceased was said to have fainted and was brought to the clinic but was rejected and transferred immediately to another better hospital. What were they supposed to do than that

If you ask me?
However, most students have not come to an understanding of the difference between a clinic and a hospital.
An occurrence like this happened last year when a sick student was brought to school and was asked to bring a card of identification and the sick fellow later died due to he was not answered quickly. Yes, the university is to be blamed for stuff like this, but can they be blamed, let's dive into some reasons I think the university should improve on for their clinic and why I think the university should not be blamed for such occurrence.

Firstly, what is a clinic and what is a hospital, The difference.
Hospitals and university clinics differ in scope, services, and limitations. Hospitals offer comprehensive medical care, including specialized departments, surgeries, and overnight stays. They address complex cases, provide continuous attention, and are equipped for emergencies, surgeries, and births. In contrast, clinics focus on outpatient care, routine check-ups, preventive services, and minor treatments. They often lack resources for complex cases and overnight stays but bridge the gap between doctor's offices and hospitals, offering extended hours and various services.

University hospitals are often affiliated with medical schools, providing training for medical students, research facilities, and specialized care. Their limitations might include longer wait times due to high patient volume and potential focus on research, affecting patient care. Regular hospitals lack direct academic affiliations, but might have shorter wait times and a more direct focus on patient care. University clinics offer specialized care and cutting-edge treatments, but their limitations may involve more bureaucratic processes and potentially higher costs compared to private clinics.(Futa does not have this type)

Hospitals offer comprehensive inpatient care, while clinics, including university clinics, emphasize outpatient and preventive services. University clinics have academic affiliations and advanced treatments, while regular clinics provide more direct care but with potential limitations due to resources and bureaucracy.
So there is a difference between a clinic and hospital, though a university clinic whereby there are students that studies medicine or medicine related courses are better that those who don’t.

One question others ask it should a university clinic reject students? Let's look into that

Nigerian university clinics may reject or transfer a student patient when they are unable to provide the necessary level of care. The reasons for this can vary depending on the specific circumstances and institution involved. One possible reason is that university clinics, especially those in public universities, may have limited resources, including medical equipment, staff, and expertise. When faced with a complex or specialized medical condition that is beyond their capacity to handle, the clinic may decide to transfer the patient to a facility better equipped to provide the required care.
The decision to reject or transfer a patient above their ability is guided by ethical considerations and legal frameworks. According to a consultant family physician at the University of Ilorin, public hospitals have no right to refuse patients. The ethicality of patient rejection depends on the institution of practice. Doctors in private practice have more discretion in choosing who to treat, whereas public hospitals must provide care to all patients.

In Nigeria, there are regulations and guidelines in place to ensure equitable access to healthcare services. However, challenges such as limited resources and brain drain of healthcare professionals pose significant obstacles to the provision of comprehensive care. Efforts are being made to strengthen the healthcare system in Nigeria, including addressing these challenges and improving access to quality healthcare for all.
Please note that the information provided is based on available sources and may not represent the full extent of the reasons and guidelines specific to each Nigerian university clinic.

Until we know more, there is less we can say and we should say.

About asking for an ID card before treatment I believe it has a reason but seeing someone who is down and asking for an ID card is wrong I think, I believe instead of just telling students to take their mate to another hospital why can’t they school look for a means to transfer the person themselves why is there ambulance in the school, just why it’s not the student fault that you guys not have enough amenities to attend to us.

It’s time they take student health as a priority, there are cases where students won’t be able to get a drug of just 200 naira in the clinic, they will always be directed to get the drug from a pharmacy, the question here is why should we come to the clinic and not go to the pharmacist straight it’s time school take their student health as important.

If it’s to build a mini hospital or a hospital itself that should happen, Life can’t be replaced, life has no exchange. It’s painful that a life is lost due to what could be prevented.

Now to us as a student, it’s important to go to the clinic immediately if we feel weak or see any symptoms of sickness Go to the clinic don’t delay, don’t postpone. Don’t say if we finish the exam, I will go.

It’s someone alive that writes exams, If you won’t be sleeping Eat well, If you won’t be eating well sleep. Try to pick one
May God Help us as we help ourselves.

CONDOLENCES TO THE BEREAVED.

People need to put their emotions aside abeg. The student was brought in dead. What do you expect the health center to do? Pump life back into him? No one prays for such unfortunate incidence, but it's important that Nigerians learn to separate facts from emotions.
