*What is ENDOMETRIOSIS?.*

It simply means location of endometrium elsewhere apart from the normal inner surface of the womb.

This endometrium or cover of the inner surface of the womb is not supposed to be found at any other place in the body, apart from the inner surface of the womb.

So when it is found at any other place in the body apart from the inner portion of the womb it is called *ENDOMETRIOSIS.*

This endometrium that is found outside the inner portion of womb respond to hormones like the normal endometrium lining the womb.

Such that during menstruation 🩸,as blood is coming from the womb, the endometrium outside the womb also menstruates wherever they are located causing severe pain for the lady


It's one of the commonest non cancerous conditions seen at laparoscopic.

It is not a cancerous condition but can behave like cancer, in that it penetrates the surrounding tissues wherever it is located.

Generally it's present in about 10 to 20 females out of 100 females within reproductive age.

*It's present in 30 out of 100 females with infertility challenge.*


It's present in 15 out of 100 females complaining of pain within the pelvis including severe menstrual and Vaginal intercourse pain.

*Where are the commonest locations of this abnormal endometrium?.*👇👇

1. On the Ovaries

2. Behind the V causing serious pain during V intercourse.

3. Over the bladder.

4. The colon

5. Back of the womb.

6. On the bed of the ovary.

7. On the intestines.

8. On the appendix.

9. On the belly button.unbilicus

10. Within lungs

11. Scar of fibroids or cesarean section.

12. In the nose.

Generally it can be found anywhere within the body.

*What are the signs and symptoms?.*

It's largely dependent on the location of Endometriotic lesion.

The extent of the suffering of a female with endometriosis does not tally with the size or extent of the disease but the location of the Endometriotic lesion.

So if the endometriosis is located within the pelvis, these are the possible symptoms.

1. Severe menstrual pain

2. Lower abdominal pain

3. Pelvic pain

4.Lower back pain

5. Excessive and or prolong menstrual bleeding with passage of clotted blood.

6. Severe painful V intercourse especially on deep penetration.

7.Sudden severe lower abdomen pain following rupture of endometriosis of the ovary.

8. Irregular period.

When the location is in the Urinary system. (In the system that is helping us to make urine)

*The following are the possible signs and symptoms.👇👇*

1. Periodic or monthly pain when passing urine.

2. Monthly passage of blood in the urine.

3. Loin pain

4. Blockage of ureter.i.e the pipe that carries urine from bladder.

5. Kidneys failure.

When it is located in the Gastrointestinal system.i.e the system that helps us digest our food.

The following are possible.

1. Pain on defecation what we call Dyschezia.

2. Monthly bleeding from the anus.

If it is located within the Lung.

2. Difficulty in breathing that occurs monthly.

3. Monthly chest pain and tightening.

If it's located on the belly button or any scar on the skin of abdomen.

The following are possible.

1. Monthly pain at the belly button.

2. Monthly painful swelling at the belly button.

3. Monthly bleeding from the scar.
