Ekene Ugwuanyi's Book by IkennaOodo: 4:09pm On Aug 27, 2023 |
This book is a brave and courageous enquiry, exposition, revelation and critique of the pre-colonial, colonial and postcolonial history of Igbo Nsukka, that is, Igbos north of the South-East, Nigeria. The book begins with what is obviously the most ferocious and critical enquiry into the proposed Igala and Nri origin and migration of the people of Igbo Nsukka, distilling, by means of evidences factual and astonishing, an unprecedented uniqueness into the origin, past and practices of the Nsukka people; putting an end to shallow debates and propositions, complicating establishments and excavating essences into the past and primitive norms and values of the people under reference. The most defining and profound territorial contests by the leading states of the people of Igbo Nsukka before the colonial encounter are not left behind in the book, neither is the Nsukka side of the story into the horrors of the civil war. To have done all these and more, evolving and using what is uniquely indigeneous Igbo Nsukka letters of the alphabet, with a full chapter dedicated to discourses on Igbo Nsukka phonetics and phonology is not only daring but symbolic of the astuteness of a work resolved to open up questions and answers into an obscured past. Among the few remittances that we have had so far in the history of Igbo Nsukka, Ekene Ugwuanyi's Precolonial, Colonial and Postcolonial account seems to have distinguished itself as not just the most elaborate, but the most comparative and, most importantly, the most daring and interpretative. It is within this scope of comparison, interpretation and courage, where history situates its power, that Ekene Ugwuanyi equally situates his relevance in the committee and cult of the scribes of Igbo Nsukka "historidom". The following are the contents of the book👇 CHAPTER ONE An Introduction to Igbo Nsukka Phonetics and Phonology Letters of Igbo Nsukka alphabet CHAPTER TWO Igbo Nsukka: An Overview Nsukka as a Town Nsukka as a Local Government Nsukka as a Cultural Zone in the Igbo Tribe Communities in Igbo Nsukka CHAPTER THREE Igbo Nsukka Communities: Origins and Migrations Acho Omeppa, the First Achadu Attah of Idah The Emergence of Achadu in Igala History CHAPTER FOUR Igbo Nsukka and Nri: the Question of Origin Igbo Nsәka Communities Who Claim Nri Origin Eze-Ọkpaka Nwa Eze-Nshi of Ẹha-Arụmọna Awa Nwa Eze-Nshị of Ogboduele, Ẹha-Arụmọna CHAPTER FIVE Igbo Nsukka and Igala: the Question of Origin CHAPTER SIX The Evolution of Names in Igbo Nsәka and Why Some Nsukka Igbos Bear Igala Names CHAPTER SEVEN The 19th Century Wars of Territorial Expansion among the Ancient States of Igbo Nsukka CHAPTER EIGHT Religion and Spirituality of the Pre-Colonial Igbo Nsukka Understanding Igbo Nsukka Traditional Religion The Idea of the Supreme Being in Igbo Nsukka God’s Essence In Igbo Nsukka Cosmology The Question of God’s Gender in Igbo Nsukka Cosmology Alә/Anә – (Earth God(Dess)) CHAPTER NINE Deities in Igbo Nsukka CHAPTER TEN Chi as a Guardian Angel in Igbo Nsukka Cosmology The Differences between Chi, Chukwu and Chineke in Igbo Ontology Ọgọ Chi Ritual and Reincarnation (ịlụa-ụwa) in Igbo Nsukka and their Significance CHAPTER ELEVEN Ekwensu in Igbo Nsukka Cosmology CHAPTER TWELVE Evil Spirits in Igbo Nsukka Cosmology and their Exorcisms CHAPTER THIRTEEN Ọfọ as a Symbol of Justice in Igbo Cosmology CHAPTER FOURTEEN Ọmabẹ Akweka Odi: History, Ritual and Festival Ọmabẹ Feast Celebration in Igbo Ọmabẹ CHAPTER FIFTEEN Odo Festival: History, Ritual and Celebration CHAPTER SIXTEEN The History of Slave Trade and the Ohu/Osu Caste System in Igbo Nsukka The Beginning of Domestic Slavery in Nsukka CHAPTER SEVENTEEN Nd’ Ishi/Nna Di Tradition and Marital Infidelity in Igbo Nsukka Ishi Nri Nna-Di Ritual for a Married Woman in Igbo Nsukka The Ritual of Appeasement, Ngọdo, of the Ancestors by an Adulterous Wife Marital Laws Binding on Men in Igbo Nsukka CHAPTER EIGHTEEN Paternity Rules and Ownership of Children in Igbo Nsukka CHAPTER NINETEEN Marriage between a Woman and a Fellow Woman in Igbo Nsukka CHAPTER TWENTY The Concept of Orinechi in Igbo Nsukka and the Mysteries behind the Use of Cows for Funerals CHAPTER TWENTY ONE How to Count Days In Igbo Nsukka Dialect CHAPTER TWENTY TWO The Indigeneous Method of Counting Money in Igbo Nsukka Dialect CHAPTER TWENTY THREE The Coming of the White Man to Igbo Nsukka and the History of Colonialism CHAPTER TWENTY FOUR Introduction of Christianity and Western Education to Igbo Nsukka CHAPTER TWENTY FIVE Biafran War: the Nsukka Side of the Story The Coups and the Plights of Nsukka Igbo Nsukka and the Biafran War The Intervention of Nzeogwu NB: Copies are now available at Amazon. Echile: He literally explained the phrase in his very first sentence. Every author is at liberty to coin unique words or phrases as they see fit. We need to be calming down - the courage to criticise is very cheap. @OP Interesting take on history. I read the Igbo - Igala borderland by Shelton in university - it does provide a unique perspective. I however look forward to reading an indigenous account of Igbo Igala relations. Please let me know how to order the paperback version. 2 Likes |
