One out of every five Nigerians living in Thailand is serving a jail term for drug related offences, Nigerian Ambassador to Thailand, Ambassador Chudi Okafor, has said.

Okafor in an interview with our correspondent on Tuesday said out of the 2000 Nigerians living in Thailand, 400 are serving various jail terms.

To stem the tide, the envoy said the Nigerian mission in Thailand had employed different strategies, including town hall meetings and prison visitations, to give Nigerians proper orientation on living in their host country.

He said there was a need for more efforts to be made by parents to deter their children and wards from travelling to Asia in general without any genuine mission.

Okafor, “There are more responsible Nigerians who respect the rules and regulations of this beautiful country but what we are also saying is that from home, these Nigerians are not from the moon. They are from our parents; they are from our villages. They are from our towns; they are from our states.

“What it means is that we should show more concern. We should show more interest right from our villages in Nigeria. We should be able to sensitise our people. You don’t just go abroad for the sake of going abroad. At the end of the day you find yourself being shamed, all in the name of going to prison.

“We are reasoning together with them and saying, ‘yes, we have challenges and difficulties in Nigeria but there is no place like home.’ The time has come for our parents and relatives at home to begin to ask questions. What are you going to do? Asia is not one of the regions in the world where jobs are lying on the streets as it used to in parts of America and Europe.”

The envoy also disclosed that the mission had been able to secure an agreement that allowed Nigerians serving jail terms to be released at a point so that they could go and complete their terms in the country.

Instead of this ambassador to say that 20 percent of his fellow Biafrans are wallowing in jail for drug related offenses, he is roping all Nigerians together. The developers ruined the chances of Nigerians to have a peaceful vacation in any country. They should make a law to ban any family whose brother or sister commits an offense abroad From receiving international passport for 20years .

Those are people from the region we know better. How could people be this desperate because of money. Some of them are even on death row. They will come here to brag that they can feed our entire generation whereas they know they are thieves, criminal and drug barons.

Charity begins at home.

Sometimes when I see how some people behave I will just ask myself if this person can try this in a more civilized settings,. In a place where there's rule of law.

An accident occurred in my area yesterday evening, the guy with Lexus that caused the whole thing went away his car not damage or anything........but it was one other bike man nd another car that was badly affected If it were to be in counties were you're accountable for your shenanigans that Lexus guy should be in prison now.

So most Nigerians deserve what they get abroad.

True words...80% of them from same state in the South East, and mostly young boys who were deceived by bigger druglords. Once they get there, they realise there is no work for them and they are forced to deliver packages, get caught and jailed for 20,30 years undecided

I wonder why the Ambassador didn't state their names of state of origin.

This would have made the news interesting.

Although I have carried out a research and I was able to get the details of the 20%.

For peace to reign I will keep the details secret although I know many Nigerians can easily dictate the particular region even without been told.

The Federal government should ban Nigerians from going to certain countries, including Thailand, Cuba, Turkey, Cyprus, Malaysia, Singapore, India, and Libya. If you must be allowed to travel to such countries, you must get special approval from Nigeria's foreign affairs ministry.

90% of Igbos who visit such countries go there to peddle drugs. I don't care what anyone thinks. If I get the opportunity, I will implement it. Some shame/crime is better nipped in the bud than fought. This embarrassment is becoming unbearable.

It is impossible to see an Hausa man among those prisoners while the percentage of Yorubas will be below 2%
