An out-of-control 24-wheeler truck plunged down Cape Town's busy Kloof Nek Road , smashing into cars before overturning next to an apartment building. Former Miss SA Cindy Nell-Roberts was among those injured in the accident, and she was hospitalised along with five others on Tuesday.

Eyewitnesses said the truck, which was carrying boxes of frozen fish, started losing its load and veering wildly when it descended the steep road.

The truck driver was trapped inside the overturned cabin, which was locked. A contractor who was working on a nearby site rushed to the scene and used a circular saw, which residents of the apartment block attached to electric leads through their windows for power, to cut open the door.

"He was very nervous about whether he killed someone or not," said Oliver. Hundreds of boxes were strewn across Kloof Nek Road and onlookers cleared the street to make way for emergency vehicles.
