Despite this sounding like a good idea. I think it's a terrible one. Just train one of the staff of the company on how to handle emergency, preferably the security personnel.

Is fire outbreak the most pressing issue in Nigeria. Look at the cost implications on the organization especially small business and start ups. Imagine employing a staff to do nothing other than to wait for fire emergency. How many buildings dey catch fire.

The government should as a matter of fact stop shifting their responsibilities to the masses. Just employ more fire fighters and build more stations.

Funny policy that even the western world don't have. Why not insist that such buildings must have sprinkler and fire detectors as done world over.

Fire Safety Officers. On the surface this sounds like good news since it would create jobs, and the idea is meant to help organisations prevent or minimize fire incidence.

But let's be pragmatic and realistic here. Who will pay those fire safety officers? I am imagining some organisation who never had fire incidence since inception being forced to employ some personnel who will end up doing nothing for years but will be collecting salary monthly! Which business owner will be happy to maintain such staff in his payroll?

Since most of these organisations already have security guards the security guards should be mandated to undergo the fire safety training and be able to handle any fire incidence that occur when they are on duty instead of forcing organisations to employ fire safety officers they don't really need and would just be doing doing nothing for years while collecting salary steady.

Nevertheless, I think such rule should be enforced in high risk environment that is notorious for fire incidence.

We have a plethora of NEBOSH qualified safety officers in this country who are wasting away. In reasonable climes, every public facility usually have a safety officer. This is because without safety assurance and processes, every public space is just an accident waiting to happen.

Don't say what you don't know. Safety officers are an essential part of any serious minded organisation and is commonplace in the western world . It isnt optional but mandatory. Sprinklers, smoke detectors and fire doors are there to aid in detection and management of fire emergencies.

It is at the moment…. It’s the duty of the employer to seek for training of their staffs on fire fighting.

Who’s gonna pay the certified fire safety officer? The government or the employer?

Before I became a seafarer, I didn’t know about firefighting, I had to be trained on fire fighting in case of fire outbreak onboard a ship.

Staffs can be trained on simple usage of fire fighting equipment, mock drills to avert any future fire outbreak

Yeah, great idea protecting the private establishments but it sounds like you forgot there are establishments for the general public e.g the marketplaces. What about them?
