When Yorubas were Incharge of Theatre, people were not buying Local films to Watch in their homes - Kannayo O Kannayo counters actress who said Yorubas started Nollywood | #IgbereTV

"Kenneth Nnebue, an Igbo man was producing Yoruba movies, then in 1991/1992 wrote a script titled ‘Living in Bondage’.

"Before then, the theaters belong to the Yorubas, no argument about that, but people were not buying local films to watch in their houses except foreign films. Immediately Kenneth Nnebue made ‘Living in Bondage’, it caught like wild fire and almost everybody bought into it, so home videos became a trend and a trade"

"Some left the business they were doing before to invest in movie production. The coming of ‘Living in Bondage’ gave rise to what we have today as Nollywood" he said.

He is speaking from both sides of the mouth. That's the problem with lying; you say one lie and you need another lie to cover it.

How can Igbo man be producing Yoruba films and sell? Smh

And how he conveniently avoided telling his audience about the successful home Yoruba videos released well before 1991 is best known to him.

Yoruba started and own Nollywood. QED

Atleast he admitted Yorubas had begun producing and selling home videos before living in bandage.

Is there anything like Home video now or cassette video or even VCD? Yet the movie industry is still called Nollywood.

So obviously what matters is the production and not the means of distribution.

We know whose movies dominate the cinema circuit in Nigeria.

Drama is part of Yoruba culture.

You're not old enough to comment on the issue since you're obviously not well informed

We spent money back i the days to watch Pa Ogunde plays, the likes of Jaguar - As far back as the early 80s, Nigerians would spend heavily on cinema tickets to watch Pa Ogunde. I even bought one around 1988 -1990 to watch one of his cinematic movies

People spent heavily on theatres to watch Chinese, Indian and locally made movies.

Even Baba suwe, Aiye akamara was way before 1990. But Living in bondage would trigger a fire that would hit the entire industry, no doubts

Things fall apart was as far back as 80s and core igbo. Everyone had their fair share of things both Yoruba and igbo. Stop all this tribal wars abeg

Only God knows whatever happened to yorubas first omota in movies.

He made a mistake.Nigerians were buying but they were not as many as when Igbos joined and they became more when Hausa joined.
The first vhs videos made were made by a gospel group before Living In Bondage.
Population grew and the market grew.
Simple logic.

Living in Bondage started the business in Nollywood. If Yoruba movies existed before then, most people were not aware because most Nigerians were interested in Indian and American movies

Yoruba people your village drama is not the same as Nollywood.

Every tribes in Nigeria has it local dramas before what's now known as Nollywood.

If you ask Yorubas to mention the movies they made before living in bondage by Igbos, what you will be hearing is name that sounds like masquerade names that only few Yorubas know, and no body from other tribes in Nigeria know.

If you like make I also tell you our town dramas as far back as 1937.

The only Nigerian movie I ever watched was the first living in bondage and one obscure nollywood movie on YouTube. The lead Igbo male xter kept me mesmerized and it also had a dwarf lady that I really liked too.

No offeinse to Nigerian movies, I can count the number of Hollywood movies on one hand that I’ve also watched. Movies don’t keep my interest. I can’t seem to get past the first five minutes of most/all movies.

The only movies that I can watch and rewatch is The Shawshank Redemption and The last of the Mohicans (It has the most beautiful soundtrack)

They were doing backyard plays until Igbos got involved and created the second biggest movie industry in the world.

People that have no business sense or how to make something out of nothing, think they can compete with Igbos.

Rubbish people!

Quite contradictory. So you all accept that Yorubas have been making movies even though without commercial success before living in bondage was produced. So, what’s the argument about again?

Yorubas started both theater and home movie production. Igbos took over at some point and expanded the scope. Today, it’s an equal field for everyone with Yorubas taking the shine with blockbuster after blockbuster in the last 5 years.

Rubbish people!

Most of them back them were busy acting their dramas in public primary and secondary schools, where pupils were paying them 5 kobo to watch them act and they now want to form boss that they commercialized Nigerian movie industry.

Ask them how many nationals of other African countries in their countries know their home grown Yoruba actors and actresses?

You obviously would not be old enough to know the root of most ancient popular names and would deduce them as Yoruba names. Stop your bigotry. God never created any tribe before the other.

Na so igbos envy Yorubas so tey FG notice am and punished the South East with the highest cut off marks! cheesy cheesy cheesy cheesy cheesy cheesy

See as you pin mouth for Lagos as if that is all you have in life! If dem leave you now, you go lie say na Yorubas first bring electricity for Nigeria in Lagos, na dem build the first railway lines, the first general hospital, the Iju water works etc when there is documented history that they were all done by the BRITISH!

Gather liver compare Osun state to Imo state, not using Lagos that was developed with the national wealth and human capital resources of all the tribes in Nigeria.

Why Ekiti state no be like Lagos?

I don't think since this argument started I have said anything about it not until now. Moreover, I ask you, is the argument necessary about which ethnic group started Nollywood? Is there a special recognition to that effect? Outside Nigeria, no one gives a flying fucck about Igbo or Yoruba movies. It's all about a general term called Nollywood.

How can you post the comment reproduced below and then respond with the above comment? How? Hypocrisy or what? If the argument is not necessary, why make the comment below? A particular ethnic group have been claiming sole ownership of Nollywood for some years now. Some years back, they even claimed Yoruba movies are not part of Nollywood in order to maintain their self acclaimed ownership of the industry. Now that the records are being set straight, you now think it’s not necessary even when comment is suggesting otherwise? Madam, Beremx must be another name for hypocrisy.
