Chikwe Ihekweazu, the Assistant Director General at the World Health Organization (WHO), shared his reflections on the recent 78th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) and its pivotal role in advancing global pandemic preparedness and response efforts. Apart from Nigozi Okonjo Iweala who was representing the World Trade Organisation (WTO) another Nigerian has been able to make the country proud and the continent.

In a historic moment, Ihekweazu attended his first United Nations General Assembly, where he proudly represented the World Health Organization as part of its delegation. The UNGA, held annually, included a High-Level Meeting on Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness, and Response this year.

The highlight of this gathering was the unanimous approval by all 193 United Nations Member States of a crucial political declaration. This declaration underscores a collective commitment to enhance global readiness for future pandemics and reaffirms the vital role played by organizations like the WHO in tirelessly addressing health challenges around the clock.

Just four months ago, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the Director-General of the WHO, declared an end to the COVID-19 pandemic as a public health emergency. However, the world continues to grapple with the aftermath of the pandemic, alongside increasingly complex and protracted health crises. The UNGA provided a platform to harness political momentum and reiterate the dedication to safeguarding the global population from health threats.

With the political commitment secured, the next imperative for WHO’s Member States is to implement the new pandemic instrument by May 2024. This instrument aims to establish a united global ecosystem that bolsters local, national, and regional health systems while emphasizing global trust and solidarity in delivering equitable and timely countermeasures.

The WHO Hub for Pandemic and Epidemic Intelligence is playing a pivotal role in transforming global surveillance and public health intelligence. Through collaborative surveillance, the WHO is enhancing the capacity and cooperation among diverse stakeholders in surveillance, transcending borders and sectors. The ultimate goal is to empower leaders with the ability to make rapid and flexible decisions through improved public health intelligence.

Recognizing the uniqueness of each country’s situation, collaborative surveillance underscores the importance of intentional collaboration. It is essential to work together across geographical boundaries, disciplines, and disease surveillance systems to foster regional and global cohesion for future health emergencies. At the core of this collaborative effort are national public health agencies, with statutory responsibility for surveillance in every country.

While the High-Level Meeting at UNGA23 marked a significant milestone, Ihekweazu emphasized that there is much work ahead. The global community remains committed to the continued pursuit of a safer and healthier world.

Chikwe Ihekweazu serves as the Assistant Director General at the World Health Organization (WHO).

Nice one..

The day quota system would be eradicated in Nig civil service some people will find themselves in the farm instead of different offices they occupied today ....

The day there would be level playing ground in Nigeria in all sectors is the day Nigeria will regain her glory...

Let empty skulls keep having a field day in Nigeria, they should enjoy it while it lasts because a day of reckoning is coming and it's inevitable

Igbos making Nigeria proud all around the world .

What Nigeria needs right now is Igbo presidency since we've tried Hausa, Fulani, Yoruba and South south and they all failed. Let's try the Igbo presidency.

This mentality is why many igbo youths have been killed over the past nine years. Figen them false assurance of invicibility.

Contain yourself. The igbos are never more intelligent, hard working or industrous.

A creative human being is a creative human being. Plus, there are numerous Nigerians across all ethnic nationalities in various ooaces of authority across the world. Get rid of your disillusionment of self importance

Be humble enough to admit that Buhari single handedly made Okonjo Iweala the DG of WTO.

Nigerian government under Buhari withdrew the candidacy of another Nigerian who already was a career technocrat with WTO, and replaced him with Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as Nigeria's candidate to compete against Egypt for the African nomination.

Okonjo-Iweala secured the African nomination to contest in the global race that she then won.

Be grateful and stay humble.

These children do not know that Nigerians presence in the international bodies was more in those days than today.

Find out about Igbo in International Court.

Find out about Yoruba in World Health Organization.

Indeed, in the dying days of colonialism, Africans were proud to welcome Nigerians to replace Europeans in the technical positions that were vacated out of spite.

Why are these Youths celebrating every job or position filled by Nigerians?

Do yourself a favour and STFU!

He’s right in his assertion! Only thing i’d add is that it’s just a certain power-hungry and bigoted clique (found mostly in two ethnicities) that don’t appreciate Igbos’….not the entire country!

Which Nigerian was elected as the president International Court?
On March 11, 2018 the judges of the International Criminal Court (ICC) selected as their president for the next three years Judge Chile Eboe-Osuji of Nigeria. Judge Eboe-Osuji was elected to the ICC in 2013 by the Assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute, which acts as the Charter for the Court.
