GIRL CHILD-BEYOND THE RHETORICS: ETSAKO EAST CHAIRMAN OUTLINES BARRIERS AND BENEFITS OF GIRLS' EDUCATION ON INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE GIRL CHILD.

The Performing Chairman of Etsako East Local Government Council has called on leadership in the country to go beyond paying mere lip service to the celebration of International Day of Girl Child by coming out with realistic ways of addressing continuous fundamental challenges that every female child faces.

According to her, despite the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) brilliant statement on girl child education, the impending barriers that have hindered the success of the MDGs are still unaddressed across the African continent. Female Children are still been dumped educationally.


She described poverty and ignorance as factors that have made families draw a scale of preference between educating a male and a female child without understanding the benefits of educating girls, whose role is often narrowly viewed as being prepared for marriage, motherhood, and domestic responsibilities.


Hon. (Princess ) Benedicta Attoh in her message to Mark the 2023 International Day of The Girl Child said "Early Marriage, Teenage Pregnancy, the Burden of care of ill parents and younger siblings often fall on girls which jeopardizes their ability to attend school.


In addition, rape and dehumanizing the female gender are factors that continue to limit the abilities of the girl child against self-actualization.


She expressed her gratitude to the First Lady of Edo State, Mrs Betsy Obaseki for her tireless campaign against rape and dehumanizing of the girl child. The Council Boss said the First Lady has brought these challenges to the fore in Edo state with her efforts.


The Chairman tasked the society to wake up to its moral obligations to girl children by educating them saying education is the greatest weapon in correcting gender disparities thereby exposing them to Political, social, and economic empowerment for them to contribute to the development of the nation.


Hon. (Princess) Benedicta Attoh who is an Author, Girl Child advocate, and the first elected female Local Government Chairman in Edo North further outlines the benefits of girls' education to include reducing poverty, improving the health of Women and Children, Delay in Marriage against early marriage which hinders education, reducing Female genital mutilation, increase self-confidence and decision-making power as well as increase the female visibility in public and private sectors.


While congratulating Girls in Etsako East Local Government Council for their discipline and commitment to homegrown principles, Hon. Princess Benedicta has also offered to sponsor any female child from Etsako East who is willing and ready to learn a trade or acquire any skill under the sponsorship of the council.


"To achieve our collective goal of creating a peaceful and prosperous Etsako East, we must help ensure all girls are educated, healthy, and safe so they can participate fully in the social, economic, political, and cultural life of their communities she added.”
