Kano State In Darkness As Electricity Union Shuts Down KEDCO Indefinitely by PlsStayAlive: 5:50pm On Oct 17, 2023
The National of Electricity Employees, Kano State Chapter, on Monday, shut down the state’s Electricity Distribution Company indefinitely over the failure of the management to remit pension deductions for the past 72 months.
NUEE Chairman, Northwest Zone of the union, Ado Riruwai, who was said to have led the picketing of the company, said the union would not continue to fold its arms and allow the company to continue to stop the remittance of pension money.
At the same time, Riruwai lamented that the Kano Electricity Company has taken upon itself the victimisation of union leaders, who want to speak on behalf of staff.
He said this act is tantamount to imperialism and wickedness against the rights of workers as enshrined in the Nigeria Constitution to victimize anybody who wants his freedom at work.
“This illegal act is tantamount to wickedness against the rights of workers as enshrined in the Nigerian constitution,” Riruwai said.
In the same vein, the union accused the management of the company of refusing to provide medicare for workers, despite the hazard of Jobs at the KEDCO.
When contacted, the Head, Corporate Communication Unit of the company, Mr Sani Bala Sani, confirmed the picketing of the company by the union. He said the action was on the staff welfare issue which has been lingering for over five years.
According to him, the problem was inherited from the former management who failed to address the issue before they left.
“This is an issue which borders on the welfare of workers and it has been lingering for over five years,” Sani Bala Sani said.
