I am from Imo State and the plan by Rochas Okorocha to pay 20k as MW smacks of cheap populism. This is a state where this same governor sacked thousands of youths employed by the previous administration and claims of a looted treasury abound. Where will the money come from? Rochas is a scam who understands the role of hype in govet. Imo state is in dire straits with its youths roaming the streets yet this dude cannot let an opportunity to jump infront of the cameras pass by. Owerri is now a town dotted with heaps of refuse yet people say Rochas is working. Pardon me, but I really beg to differ. How do you claim to be a philanthropist when your foundation is being bank rolled by foreign donors and you pocket the money meant for your NGO in cahoot with your media goons. People call Rochas a millionaire philantropist but he was the same guy dismissed by Obasanjo as head of NAMA (National Aerospace Management Authority) in 2004 for embezzling $1 million (confirmed by Wikileaks). I'm sorry for my dear state. By the tim Rochas is through with Imo State, Ohakim will be a saint

So 20k minimum wage is too much, about 120 dollars, man  you try and what is your suggestion?  perhaps 10k minimum wage. Are you  in a better position than  the governor to know how much Imo state owns? Truly talk is cheap and opinions are free. embarassed

You see the mentality that has stopped Nigeria from moving forward!! There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof, your, guess is as good as your knowledge of this scripture.

I am happy if he could have made it up to 50'k, cos frankly, no man can survive on 20'k per month and live a decent life in Nigeria. Now I am not saying 20'k is bad sir, all I'm saying is that IMO States IGR has not imcreased neither has their federal allocation increased. I dont think spotting and firing a handful of ghost workers is where the excess fund is coming from.

Rochas should stop all these his billboard/campaign activities and get down to real governance. Rivers State is a much more richer state than Imo same as Akwa Ibom. Go and see what those states are doing with regards to infrastructural development. I forsee these states getting to the point where investors would find it a haven to invest in. Julius BErger has the highest number of contracts nationwide in Akwa Ibom, that ,means alot of construction related jobs in the state, which means people get to have food on their tables, and long after this administration is dead and gone, those roads, bridges and canals would keep serving their purpose and pay for themselves by the investments they would attract.

I am not impressed by sharing kerosene to every home in Imo State, if he wants to impress me, get investors to build a refinery in Imo that would be run by professionals, employ Imolites and provide enough Kerosene, PMS and AGO to serve the States demand and sell to others.

Rivers State is busy investing in a Monorail system which when completed, would open up the state, create jobs, ease transportation which will be beneficial to businesses, beautify the state and make life easy for everyone. At the same time investing in their Independent Power project. Rivers State is getting so corky that they are advocating for the State to be taken off the National grid and allowed to generate and distribute its own electricity and sell the excess megawatt to other states. Rivers State has now put in place a new policy that demands that all roads being constructed in the state must be atleast dual carriage and must come with a good drainage system not that rubbish of "Grade and tar" that was formerly applicable in the state or is still going on in many other states. Dont get me started on healthcare or the schools in the state o!! In fact, I am soon going to start a thread where I will be putting up pictures of whats going on in the State for you to understand what development and good governance is all about so maybe then you can be enlightened.

Now those are policies that you should be applauding not when Rochas Okorocha stands on the road and controls traffic then you all come out and sing his praises.

Don't get me started on Lagos and Fashola!! Or on Akwa Ibom and Upkabio!!

ROCHAS OKOROCHA is an EYE SERVICE governor,  When he starts doing real laudable things for Imo State, then come and I Alusi OkijaTM will personally sing his praises and offer sacrifices of thanks to the gods on his behalf. All these his shinanigans dont fool me. Typical Ndi Igbo, always waiting for an opportuinity to jump and celebrate mediocrity. Let me say it here and now that I am not impressed with any of the present set of eastern governors,  From Orji in Abia, to Sullivan in Enugu, to Obi in Anambra, to Okorocha in Imo and even the Ebonyi guy who is so dormant I dont even know his name,  My people wake up and see that we are living in stagnation.

although i am not bought over by okorocha's shenanigans it would be hilarious to be comparing imo to rivers and akwa ibom.do you know the revenue accruing to this states compared to imo?the probably get 10 times the revenue of imo so saying that they are building infrastrusture here and there is highly expected and should be the norm.

moreover not all rivers guys are singing amaechi's praises because they feel that the roads he is doing especially in ph is substandard in relation to the money he gets.
Re: Okorocha Signs N20,000 Minimum Wage For Imo Workers by Abagworo(m): 9:13am On Oct 25, 2011
We should not judge this man yet.I noticed that most major urban roads in Owerri were being re-paved the last time I was there about 6 weeks ago. That one is an achievement.Nigerians generally do not regard maintenance as achievement. It is easy to negect the old roads and construct new ones to your own credit while you fault your predecessor for the old one.Imo State does not really need industries.I so much dislike commercialised and industrialised area.I think we should focus on educational institutions, tourism, oil and agriculture. The oil industry is big in Imo.The problem is that most of the companies operate from Port Harcourt. All Okorocha needs is to force the companies to establish their presence in Imo and the revenue will start coming. We are one of the largest cassava producers in Nigeria as well as oil palm.

Imo also hosts a very vibrant hospitality industry and people troop in every weekend from across the world. We have the best federal roads in Southeast and are easily accessible from Anambra,Rivers and Abia.

@ Okija_juju. Well said. It feels good to see that some folks actually use their brains and are not fooled by Rochas's shenanigans.

@ asha 8o. If Imo cannot be compared to Rivers and Akwa Ibom cos of the revenue accruing to these states, what of Enugu and Cross Rivers States? They say one sees the mindset of an administrator by his aides. Look at Okorocha's aides and you wouldn't be too far as to why the ship of governance in Imo State is floundering. BTW, it is the height of dishonesty to call roads being built by Amaechi substandard. I live in PH and that is simply an untruth. #chikena

as for the second bolded ask the likes of rhino dm and otokx who also live in portharcout.

The truth is that these lebanese companies handling the construction projects in Rivers State are rather slow and the roads are truly not up to par, but to be frank, the roads being constructed in Rivers State by this administration would last longer than those constructed by the previous administration, and I say this because they are paying particular attention to providing drainages. What normally obtains is a contractor comes in with a grader, grades the road, lay down fresh tar, level it out, take a picture and come raining season the following year and the roads are as bad as it was previously.

Now my point is this, If States like Rivers State, Lagos State and Akwa Ibom who earn way way more than Imo State have said that they cant comfortably pay the 18,000 Naira minimum wage and continue with the on-going projects in their respective States without a review of the allocation system from the federal government, where then does Rochas Okorocha come up with the 20,000 Naira minimum wage then. Now this must mean that he has decided to shelve infrastructural developments for salaries or the State must have some hidden stash of money somewhere that we havent been told about. Now dont forget that his Administration upon inception claimed that the previous Administration left the state greatly indebted which was why he gave an illegal order to banks to freeze all the states accounts even before he was sworn in as governor.

Rochas needs to step his game up!! Coming out to say education is free in Imo state and people where jumping and almost declaring a public holiday to mark this, forgeting that constitutionally, it is the right of every child to have free basic education in Nigeria in the first place according to the UBE scheme. Thats not an achievement as farr as im concerned.

How has he created more jobs for the youths in his state. How has he bettered the infrastructures on ground, what has he done to expand the state financially and economically. All this rice and kerosene sharing thing is like putting band aid over a fracture.

My dear, I am not impressed. I have gone past the stage of where when a governor reduces the price of rice in the market, I jump up and sing his praises. We need to start seeing real and tangible developments all over. His stunts are looking like that of someone desperate to seek re-election.

@ Abagworo

Is Imo state a better tourist destination than Calabar?! I think Imo State are supposed to have Oguta Lake as a tourist destination, well tell me how attrctive Oguta lake is in general. Is Oguta lake a place that can make a man budget 100,000 Naira to come and visit?! What kind of Hotels and side attractions does the place offer?! Please share with me. I agree that road maintanance is important, but what about opening up more roads as well. The guy never even start to govern, he alread organised a retreat for himself and his cabinet in "Nike Lake resort", in Enugu State!!! HELLOOO!! Its like Cross-rivers State planning a retreat and going to Bar-beach in lagos when they have Obudu,  lol

Okorocha can fool those he can fool, but when the stakes and down, we all know he has done absolutely nothing of worth for Imo State just yet.

what you saying here is the truth and that is why in the first page asked whether the IGR of imo state has increased overnight or whether ohakims debt that he complained about earlier was not crushing.

it is just that i do not like adding pepper and salt to cement arguements.

And on the roads in Rivers State, My dear I have live in that state all my life, dont let anyone fool you, the roads may not be super, but I'll be damned if over 100, they dont score atleast an 80!! And with the drainages, there life span increase quite alot.

I know they have spent two tenures, but Rochas should start showing working. His start hasnt been impressive o! 100 days in office and all he has to offer is Free school for all imo kids (which has always been free in the first place), free kerosene (bought by a state who is supposed to be in debt), A retreat in Nike Lake hotel, Enugu with his entire cabinet (when they havent even spent one year in office and they didnt even chose their own "tourist destinations in their state"wink, appointing a "state comedian on his cabinet (to serve what purpose I dont know) and now paying 20,000 Naira minimum wage to workers (when he hasnt created new jobs in the state, started any real project worth talking about and has done this at a time when even richer states with more money than him and more on-going projects than him are say its gonna be difficult to achieve 18'k).

All I'm doing is saying, where is the money coming from and what real plans does he have for imo state apart from these his petty charades. I'm not impressed.

i personally am not a fan of minimum wage.It just increases inflation and the puts an arbituary cost of doing business.
What the imo state governor needs to do is invest in skills and infrastructure that will provide more jobs for the people.

minimum wage could also kill businesses cos if i want to open a business and cannot pay my employees the minimum wage i will either have to employ less people or shut down.

@arusi okija & hugohoi, the secret to rochas success is not really how much he is recieving from federal allocation, nor imo igr. According to him, imo now saved more than 1bn every month 4rm ghost workers and other questionable expenses during the last administration. So with this, tell me how he cannot pay 20k.     @eko ile i laugh when people say rochas does not have vision. Rochas  #1 priority is education, and he has been doing just fine in that area. Before now imo student (in secondary schools used to pay 21,000 per year, and ohakim wanted to increase it to 29,000.) so the free education thing is a huge relief to poor parent who may have up to 2,3 or 4 kids in secondry school. Imo state govt has entered into an agreement to construct 15km road each in all the 27 local govts in imo state.just last week, the  govt award the contract to build 305 new primary sbhools(1 in every inec ward) whìch will be Europian standard. He has just made the state university a multi campus school and work is ongoing at the new sites in orlu and okigwe. The imo college of advance professional studies is under construction, and will be finished very soon. So what do people want this man to do, is he  going heaven on earth before people will believe he is doing something.

Na lie. No contract was awarded. This is another news paper and web page talk.

He said arrangements have been made to build European-standard schools in all the 305 electoral wards in Imo State, and this was just 4 days ago.

He did no say anything about contract award and we all know the reason why he stopped shot of saying I'm awarding contract for so and so. What is the meaning of arrangement have been made?

It's nothing but another useless and meaningless talk spewed just to deceive and distract.

You obviously don't know the meaning of vision anyways,

This Okija Juju is a tough customer to please (at least relative to certain other posters.) But I think he raises some good points.

@Eko ile am in owerri and am in a good position to give you first hand info. On friday, the office of the s.s.g made a press release that the state govt has paid the sum of 4bn out of 9b for the project. So its no longer an arrangement, but the project is very much underway.

Governor Rochas understands the problems of the masses because he was once there himself. He started from a humble background and did not forget where he is coming from. May God continue to bless and grant him the wisdom he needs to steer the affairs of his state well in Jesus name, amen.

All the other governors keep telling us is that it can't be done, so is Rochas using magic? It is really sad how some few people decide to enslave Nigerians and keep us in bondage, as long as our God is still on the throne, there. Is hope and there is light at the end of the tunnel.

My dear,

Maybe you still have the wrong idea of how government and economics work!! If every State wanted to, they could pay 100,000 Naira minimum wage, But then all you would do is give people money and the state would still be a jungle.

Whatever IMO state has in IGR, Federal allocation and their reserves, States like Rivers State, Kano, Lagos, Delta, Bayelsa, Anambra and Akwa Ibom all have more than 5 times that, so if these states grumbled about 18'k, and IMO is paying 20, then ask yourself whats up?
