The Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has said the government needs to import construction equipment worth €1.2m to effectively perform rehabilitation works on the Eko Bridge in Lagos State.

The Minister made the announcement during a working visit to Third Mainland, Carter, Falomo, Iddo, Eko, Marina and Iganmu Bridges in Lagos State, alongside some directors and contractors.

In a statement by the Deputy Director, Press and Public Relations, Clement Ezeorah, on Sunday, the minister said the deck on Eko Bridge would be opened for proper repair, hence the need to import the equipment.

Umahi said, “Due to the technicality of the job on Eko Bridge where the bridge deck would be open, equipment worth €1.2m would be imported into the country that would be used in maintaining the aspect of the bridge.”

According to the former Ebonyi governor, lack of maintenance culture from the national level was the root cause of the deflection on the bridge, while also pointing out problems on the Third Mainland Bridge which was built in two sections 60 years ago.

He said, “Eko Bridge suffers two problems – the lack of maintenance, and the eating up of the bearings. There are lots of air gaps, but the last administration did very well and wonderful work.

“Work is ongoing; it will be completed in 2024 because we are pushing for an increase in the number of workers and equipment on the site.

“Without Eko Bridge, we will not have any truck coming into Lagos Island.’’

Is this how to increase the Naira against the dollar. I thought the emilokan have been shouting buy made in Nigeria to help the naira

Can one imagine that since that bridge was built, Nigeria's successive government has been unable to develope a local content for its maintenance & rehabilitation till
this day They still need white men in abundance to build bridges since 1960. Allah damn.

You beg for dollars from whitemen, you ask them to build your infrastructures & you want to increase the value of the Naira grin grin

Do you mean to say that Nigeria has been existing since borrowed times. Where are the Civil & mechanical enginneers of Black Nigerian men since 1960.

Continue importing in dollars, equipment & whitemen to grow your naira, stabilize the naira & grow your economy to keep the jobs at home grin grin

There was no plan by successive government of Nigeria to make the country a producing nation but an import nation. Government importation is the no 1 reason for the free fall of the naira. Government borrowing is also a big reason. These importations are already established on the basis of corruption.

Mr Minister, I hope you haave started to think towards Local content for River Niger & other bridges in Nigeria Involving it's execution & maintenance . You must Design a framework for Local contents on infrastructure executions in Nigeria & also to be made as a Legal frame work & Gazetted to be invoked during every Contract biddings process. Well Nigeria don't even belief ni an open bid process. They just look for their brothers & goons who speak thesamm dialect & share thesamme religious affiliations to award contracts grin grin

...will corruption & Tribalism allow una do the right thing for Nainja ?
