Prior to the birth of Christianity John the baptist began calling the Jews to repent and get prepared for the arrival of the Christ. So all FAITHFUL Jews were going to him for baptism as a symbol of their heartfelt repentance to the covenant between God and that nation.
So if any Israelite in the first century is truly a believer he must assemble with other Jews and get baptized then continue learning how to prepare for the coming of Christ by listening to John the baptist. That was how John began having his own disciples and any Jew who fails to be a disciple of John after knowing what this man his working at surely is not a believer in the word of God because their scriptures foretold a time when someone will be crying out in the wilderness to prepare for the day of their God's visitation! Malachi 4:5 compare to John 1:23

After John's arrest his disciples went to meet Jesus of Nazareth perhaps to see what he can do for their leader to be freed but Jesus told them that he's doing his own assignment as foretold in the scriptures! Matthew 11:2-5

John himself before his arrest has told his disciples to go and JOIN Jesus' group {John 1:29-39} in fact John told them not to envy Jesus or his group because Jesus' group is the real deal! John 3:25-30

A Jew who BELIEVES in the scriptures and also live all his life according to the laws came to ask Jesus what he needs to do to gain salvation Jesus told him to trash all his wealth and prominence because he needs to JOIN Jesus' group of humble and lowly hearted individuals! Luke 18:18-23


Of course today there are countless religions all claiming followers of Christ but it's very very important for a believer to IDENTIFY the one and only group/organization practicing what Jesus taught {Hebrews 10:24-25} Satan is also gathering faithless miscreants up and down so to be on the road to salvation a believer need to distinguish between the gathering of true believers and false religionists {Psalms 1:1} because even though changes could still be made true believers are on the road to life while false religionists are heading towards destruction! Matthew 7:13-14
