Cristiano Ronaldo has received a total of 19 consecutive Ballon d'Or nominations in his career and found his way onto the shortlist every single year from the age of 19 through to 37. However, his total number of wins is now three behind that of his long-time rival, the Greatest of all time, Lionel Messi.


Cristiano Ronaldo moved to Al Nassr to play in the Saudi Pro League just weeks after his Portugal side were knocked out of the Qatar World Cup. He was, however, still eligible for the 2023 prize because he had played some matches for Manchester United early in 2022/23. That meant he had been playing club football from the beginning of the assessment period (i.e. the start of the club season in Europe), so journalists voting would have had performances on which to judge him.
