Toluige Olokoobi, the mother to Oreofeoluwa Lawal-Babalola, the little boy who inspired the viral “mummy be calming down” video, has committed suicide.

In 2020, Oreofeoluwa became an instant sensation on social media platforms after a video went viral of him in tears from his mum’s scolding while confidently telling her to “calm down” and give him a “last chance”.

The footage also inspired Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Lagos governor’s Eid-el-Kabir message to Muslim faithfuls and inhabitants of the state wherein he urged them to maintain calm amid the COVID-19 crisis.

The boy alongside his family thereafter met with the governor, who commended his courage and composure.

Oreofeoluwa was featured in several interviews with media houses. He also said he wants to be a police officer to help fight corruption in Nigeria

But on Tuesday, an X user disclosed that Toluige committed suicide in Benin due to unknown reasons.

The X user, who said he was at the scene of the incident on Monday afternoon, added that Toluige had refused to share her problems with anyone before taking her own life.

“The woman in the viral Mummy Calm down video has just committed suicide here in Benin,” he wrote.

“She refused to speak to anyone about her problems. She left three kids for her husband including the popular Mummy Calm Down boy.”

POLICE CONFIRMS TOLUIGE’S DEATH, HUSBAND DETAINED

Confirming Toluige’s demise in a chat with BBC Pidgin, Chidi Nwabuzor, the spokesperson of the Edo state police command, said her husband has been arrested and detained for questioning.

Nwabuzor said the husband reported the matter to the police.

The police spokesperson quoted the husband to have said that he came home from the market when he saw his wife hanging with rope on her neck”.

Nwabuzor said she was rushed to the hospital and then to the mortuary after she was confirmed dead

People are going through a lot in this life.

Pls as you go at every day, always make sure you put a smile on someone's face.

If you know you cannot help people, don't add to their problems.

Barely 10 years ago Nigeria weren't committing suicide. Infact Nigerians see suicide as a western thing...not applicable here

But from 2015 till date we're now topping the chat.

Someone that started been curious about Nigeria affairs from 2015 will now be thinking suicide has already been here with us.

Sad!!!

Exactly my take. The man needs serious inerrogations. What will make a woman living with you commit suicide and you never suspected or noticed any strange moves and reported or taken action before it got to that stage.

When you're living with a man that doesn't care it can always result to this because a man that cares about your wellbeing will notice when you're down and try to talk you out of whatever it is that is bothering you. He'll offer to help and take you for therapy to get the needed medical attention but it seems there's no such relationship or bond between them and they are just living like flat mates. Smh..
So much for the so called marriage relationship.

Whether you're married or not just hold onto God cos only him can take care of you regardless, both in your prime and old age.
Marriage doesn't guarantee fulfilment. Only in God you can be fulfilled.

Why detain the husband?
Unless the police have established that the man killed his wife.
If it was the man that committed suicide will the police detain his wife over the man's demise?
What happens to the kids who had just lost their mother? Who will care for them?
Their mental health?

Section 35 (1) of the Nigerian Constitution provides that “Every person shall be entitled to his personal liberty and no person shall be deprived of such liberty save in the following cases and in accordance with a procedure permitted by law:

in execution of the sentence or order of a court in respect of a criminal offence of which he has been found guilty;

by reason of his failure to comply with the order of a court or in order to secure the fulfilment of any obligation imposed upon him by law;

for the purpose of bringing him before a court in execution of the order of a court or upon reasonable suspicion of his having committed a criminal offence, or to such extent as may be reasonably necessary to prevent his committing a criminal offence

shortgun:
Why detain the husband?

Who should they detain? The dead woman or her children?

Who was with her when she took her life?
Do you know if he contributed to what led to the suicide? These are some of the reasons he was detained I guess; to find out if he's the reason or is directly or indirectly connected to the suicide.

It's normal. He needs some answering to do about what he knows concerning the death of his live in spouse.

e.

This is stupid. It's your Personal decision to end your life how and when you decide to too (if all thoughts goes as planned)
Everyone has been at an edge of contemplating sucide at one point in life.

As an adult, she must have thought it wise not to consult her own family about her decision.

She has made the best decision for her anyway. The best decision of not considering her kids welfare after she's gone. What a coward

Depression is real... Suicide is not a good legacy for the sake of the child. It's an indelible mark on his perception of life

Ok..death is never a solution to any problems ....it has never solved any, rather it creates more problems for the loved once that are alive......

Personally, i think its only a wicked and selfish human being that will think of committing suicide.....not to talk of committing it this period...

People wey dey alive dey find it hard to feed....u wan come add burial cost to their bill....why mortuary no go full with unclaimed bodies....

This is such sad news. The children are the ones that will be most affected by this.

How does it make sense for them to detain the husband? On what basis exactly?

Now it's obvious that the boy knew what he was saying, she may have been suffering from constant anxiety and depression which also affected the boy and he may have copied that line "Mummy br Calming Down" from his father always telling his now late wife to calm down.

Just like the lady who posted here that she is schizophrenic and have mental health challenges and the husband denies her sex fearing that he could be infected by the troubles spiritually, we don't know what is going on between this man and his wife, its not always that the man will be blamed for incidents like this, he may have been passing through a lot managing her condition until she decided to end it all.
Investigation and witnesses reports could reveal a lot.

The bad side here is she didn't even consider the impact of her action on those innocent kids she left behind no matter the frustration.
Its also possible she threatened her husband with suicide after a serious quarrel and went ahead to keep to her words to "punish" the man

Arrested and Detained! Why?!!

Naija police and poor service delivery... Low intelligence.

Person go report crime, next thing he or she go turn prime suspect, get arrested, and tortured.

This is why people don't like reporting crimes.

Rebrand this Police Force abeg!!!

The day I heard this woman committed suicide, I had to go beg my wife to always tell me anything that's bothering her begging that I would never let her down, tried to build some confidence with her so she knows I would always be there for her.

I legit think people who commit suicide always feel they are on their own and have lost all forms of human support. If u have this sort of support u won't do it, I think.

Is time to speak out, it's time to protest
But you people will not hear,

you fear for your lives, but what will you loose, you protest you die, you don't protest suicide and hunger will kill you regardless......
