Labour Party has expressed support for Atiku Abubakar’s proposal for a merger of opposition parties to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2023 elections. The party views Atiku’s suggestion as a positive step toward safeguarding democracy in Nigeria.

On the other hand, the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has indicated conditional acceptance of the merger proposal. NNPP insists that for their support, Atiku must endorse the candidacy of Rabiu Kwankwaso, a former governor of Kano State, in the 2027 elections to counter the APC.

Atiku’s call for opposition unity was made during a meeting with the National Executive Committee of the Inter-Party Advisory Council of Nigeria. He cautioned against the potential establishment of a one-party state, emphasizing the need for collaborative efforts to uphold democracy.

In response to Atiku’s proposition, the acting National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, Obiora Ifoh, praised the idea as a positive move towards restoring genuine democracy in Nigeria.
