Nigeria made Olympic football history by becoming the first African and non-European and South American team to win the gold medal.

Atlanta '96
August 3rd 1996 was a day alot of Nigerians will never forget. It was the day that enemies became friends, drinks were freely given, landlords forgot their rent money, bank MD's embraced their drivers, Monarchs kissed their boy-in-waiting, police and thieves shook hands. It was a day a nation jubilated and celebrated like never seen before in our history. Every Nigerian felt like a winner. The under-23 soccer team, led by Kanu Nwankwu put Nigeria in the world map by winning and making us the first African country to win the gold medal in a football event at the olympics

AGBANI DAREGO

The first African black miss world

Agbani won the title of Miss World 2001 pageant held in South Africa. This made her the first-ever black African winner of the title. The show was hosted by US talk show host Jerry Springer, and Agbani Darego's victory was widely hailed in Nigeria as a welcome bit of good news. Nigeria was just getting out of an extended stretch of military dictatorships, the economy was largely in the dumps, and people were eager for some good news. The surprise win gave fresh impetus to the beauty pageant industry in the country, and vindicated the optimistic prediction of the organizer of the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria competition, who had said that his aim in starting the competition more than 10 years earlier was to produce a Nigerian winner of either Miss World pageant or Miss Universe.

Agbani Darego becoming Miss World
On Novenber 16 2001, a nineteen year old girl single handedly put Nigeria on the world map by winning the 2001 Miss World pageant in South Africa, beating 92 other girls and setting a world record as the first black African Miss World. It was a day Nigerians openly celebrated and every one felt proud to call themselves Nigerians

Nigeria settles Paris Club debt

Despite great oil wealth, Nigeria is one of the world's poorest nations
Nigeria has paid off its multi- billion dollar Paris Club debt, becoming the first African nation to settle with its official lenders.
The move may clear the way for greater government spending on infrastructure, healthcare and education, and is hoped will prompt greater foreign investment.

Nigeria has undertaken a programme of economic reforms and the oil exporter has been helped by record crude prices.

The Paris Club is a group of 19 lenders including the UK, Russia, and Germany.

"The central bank has converted the currencies in advance so it's procedural now," Mansur Muhtar, director general of Nigeria's Debt Management Office, told Reuters.

Classic!

Another iconic scene at Barcelona that year (though not involving Nigeria, unless the guy is somehow of Nigerian descent), is that of Derek Redmond who despite a hamstring injury completed his race with the help of his dad who came down from the stands to walk him to the finish line. In Interestingly, Sunday Bada of Nigeria featured in that same race.

abacha

Abacha died while in the company of two Indian prostitutes. Though the official cause of his death was a heart attack, according to a widely held belief amongst Nigerians and Western diplomats he overdosed on Viagra or Burantashi, on June 8th, 1998. Almost every Nigerian can remember where they were when they heard the 'happy' news. Market women went into the streets singing and dancing. Nigerians were happy to hear of his death. There was even a story that went around at the time that armed-robbers didn't operate for a while in celebration of the death of Nigeria's most hated leader of all time.

Abacha's government achieved more than Obasanjo and Yara'Dua 's government combined

There has been a lot of misinformation to mislead Nigeians about who the real enemies of the country are.

It is a matter of public record that

Abacha reduced inflation from 54% to below 9%
Abacha never devalued the Naira
He set up the PTF to improve infrastructure
