How Hostel Sanitation Can Improve Students’ Health by uniprojectM1: 10:45am On Dec 15, 2023 |
Hostel sanitation generally refers to the provision of facilities and services for the safe disposal of human urine and feces in the hostel. The word 'hostel sanitation' also refers to the maintenance of hygienic conditions, through services such as garbage collection and wastewater disposal in the hostel. See Samples Of Undergraduate Projects & Research Ideas On Health. Hostel sanitation includes all four of these engineering infrastructure items (even though often only the first one is strongly associated with the term hostel sanitation): Excreta management systems, wastewater management systems (included here are wastewater treatment plants), solid waste management systems, drainage systems for rainwater, also called storm water drainage HOSTEL SANITATION It is essential for hostels to maintain a high standard of sanitation because these places are a popular and affordable choice of housing for many students. However, hostels in a typical Nigerian public university is usually unpleasant and unhygienic. An observation of the state of the art showed that the surrounding of most hostels emits unpleasant odour which is not conducive for the health of the students and that of the staff working in the hostels. This unhygienic environment can affect the health status of the students who needs good health to study harder and perform better academic so as to acquire the skills and competence needed to contributes meaningfully to the socio-economic development of the nation. CHALLENGES OF HOSTEL SANITATION PRACTICES Some challenges affecting hostel sanitation practices among undergraduates for improved health status in hostels are Inadequate toilets in the hostel, Poor drainage system in the hostel, Absenteeism of hostel cleaners, Inadequate water supply in the hostel among others. Another major challenge of hostel sanitation is that cleaners have issues in acquiring their materials for executing their duties. Majority of the respondents who at one time had complaints with the conditions of the hostel experienced delayed responses; students also reported that at one point in time they had suffered some health issues which includes malaria, typhoid, dysentery, although no case of food poisoning was recorded. Absenteeism of labourers (gardeners and cleaners), lack of water, working and cleaning materials and refuse disposal were the factors which contribute to sanitation problems in university hostels. Sanitation is one of the greatest problems facing developing countries due to inadequate facilities, poor funding, and poor implementation of policies as well as wrong lifestyle. In most tertiary institutions it can been seen that most halls in this institution were overcrowded with insufficient toilets and wash rooms for students, accommodation and sanitation facilities in the halls were found to be inadequate despite some expansions in toilets and wash rooms. Availability of soaps and anal cleaning materials was found to be inadequate. It is seen that inadequate water supply, poor toilet facilities, insufficient toilet, bathroom and waste disposal facilities and poor drainage system are the major causes of poor sanitation in the hostel environment. HOSTEL SANITATION AND STUDENTS HEALTH For any social and economic development, adequate hostel sanitation in conjunction with good hygiene and safe water are essential to good health. Lack of proper hostel sanitation causes diseases among students. Most of the diseases resulting from hostel sanitation have a direct relation to management inefficiency. The lack of clean water and poor hostel sanitation causes many diseases and the spread of diseases among students in the hostel. It is estimated that inadequate hostel sanitation is responsible for 4.0 percent of deaths and 5.7 percent of disease burden worldwide among students. Diarrhea is a major implication of poor sanitary practices. Deaths resulting from diarrhea are estimated to be between 1.6 and 2.5 million deaths every year. Most of the affected are young students. Students suffering from diarrhea are more vulnerable to become underweight (due to stunted growth) which makes them more vulnerable to other diseases such as acute respiratory infections and malaria |
