However, to become a nurse or a midwife, you need to undergo rigorous and comprehensive training that will equip you with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes required for the profession.

One of the places where you can get quality training in nursing or midwifery is the school of nursing kankia, located in Kankiya local government area of Katsina state, Nigeria. The school of nursing kankia is one of the three health training institutions under the Katsina State College of Health Sciences and Technology, which was established by the Katsina State Law No. 4 of December, 2006.

The School of nursing kankia offers various courses in nursing and midwifery, leading to the award of certificates and diplomas recognized by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN). The school also provides a conducive learning environment, with modern facilities and qualified instructors. The school has a vision to produce competent and compassionate nurses and midwives who can meet the health needs of the society.

Courses Offered by the School of Nursing Kankia

The school of nursing kankia offers the following courses in nursing and midwifery:
Basic General Nursing

This is a three-year programme that leads to the award of Registered Nurse (RN) certificate. The programme covers the theoretical and practical aspects of general nursing, including anatomy, physiology, microbiology, pharmacology, nutrition, psychology, sociology, nursing ethics, nursing research, medical-surgical nursing, maternal and child health nursing, mental health nursing, and community health nursing.

The programme prepares the students to provide comprehensive and holistic care to individuals, families, and groups in various health settings. The students also learn how to communicate effectively, work as a team, and apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills in nursing practice.

The programme is open to candidates who have at least five credits in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) or the National Examination Council (NECO) or their equivalents. The credits must include English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, obtained in not more than two sittings. The candidates must also pass the entrance examination and interview conducted by the school.

The programme has two intakes per year: March and September. The application form is usually available online or at the school premises. The application fee is N5,000. The tuition fee is N50,000 per session, excluding other charges such as accommodation, feeding, uniform, books, and registration.

Basic Midwifery

This is a three-year programme that leads to the award of Registered Midwife (RM) certificate. The programme covers the theoretical and practical aspects of midwifery, including anatomy, physiology, microbiology, pharmacology, nutrition, psychology, sociology, midwifery ethics, midwifery research, antenatal care, intrapartum care, postnatal care, family planning, and neonatal care.

The programme prepares the students to provide safe and quality care to women, newborns, and their families during pregnancy, labour, delivery, and the postnatal period. The students also learn how to promote maternal and child health, prevent complications, and manage emergencies in midwifery practice.

The programme is open to candidates who have at least five credits in the WASSCE or the NECO or their equivalents. The credits must include English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, obtained in not more than two sittings. The candidates must also pass the entrance examination and interview conducted by the school.

The programme has two intakes per year: March and September. The application form is usually available online or at the school premises. The application fee is N5,000. The tuition fee is N50,000 per session, excluding other charges such as accommodation, feeding, uniform, books, and registration.

Post Basic Midwifery

This is an 18-month programme that leads to the award of Registered Midwife (RM) certificate. The programme is designed for registered nurses who want to upgrade their skills and knowledge in midwifery. The programme covers the same curriculum as the basic midwifery programme, but with more emphasis on clinical practice and supervision.

The programme prepares the students to provide advanced and specialized care to women, newborns, and their families in various health settings. The students also learn how to conduct research, teach, and mentor other midwives in the profession.

The programme is open to candidates who have a valid RN certificate and a current practicing license from the NMCN. The candidates must also have at least one year of post-registration experience in nursing. The candidates must also pass the entrance examination and interview conducted by the school.

The programme has one intake per year: September. The application form is usually available online or at the school premises. The application fee is N5,000. The tuition fee is N75,000 per session, excluding other charges such as accommodation, feeding, uniform, books, and registration.

Community Midwifery

This is a two-year programme that leads to the award of Community Midwife (CM) certificate. The programme covers the theoretical and practical aspects of community midwifery, including anatomy, physiology, microbiology, pharmacology, nutrition, psychology, sociology, community midwifery ethics, community midwifery research, primary health care, reproductive health, and maternal and child health.

The programme prepares the students to provide basic and essential care to women, newborns, and their families in rural and hard-to-reach areas. The students also learn how to mobilize and educate the community on health issues, and collaborate with other health workers and stakeholders in the community.

The programme is open to candidates who have at least three credits in the WASSCE or the NECO or their equivalents. The credits must include English Language, Biology, and any other science subject, obtained in not more than two sittings. The candidates must also pass the entrance examination and interview conducted by the school.

The programme has one intake per year: September. The application form is usually available online or at the school premises. The application fee is N5,000. The tuition fee is N25,000 per session, excluding other charges such as accommodation, feeding, uniform, books, and registration.
