BeautifulMind2: Beautiful! We should do this in the major Nigerian languages. A Muslim brother told me in the States that he did not really understand Islam until he came to Chicago. He said they taught him Islamic teachings in Arabic, a language in which he and many others are mostly illiterate. It was not until he came to America where he found and began to read the English Koran that his eyes were opened, and he became educated to the knowledge of Islam that had been distorted by Nigerian Islamic scholars using a language he was illiterate in, Arabic. This is the state of our education in Nigeria today. Anyone who has paid attention will find out that all achieving and inventing societies study the 4 major subjects, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics, in their mother tongue. The Germans, the French, the British, the Chinese, the Japanese, etc. We must indigenize our knowledge base to grow. 2 Likes |

The truth is, most Igbos will struggle to understand the physics in Igbo. Some can't even read the Igbo language properly talk more of reading and understanding a physics text book written in Igbo. The language has to be assimilated first before it could be used in teaching. English language has done incalculable damage to most Nigerian native languages. It has to start from families, through the kindergarten and primary schools. Native languages should be used to teach pupils. 2 Likes |

Simplifying the language may not guarantee universal understanding, as some individuals might still struggle to comprehend, even with straightforward wording. |

obembet:This is a misconception I have often seen. Tell me, can you read in your local language better than you can read in the English language? If the English language is easier for you to read, what makes you think you would have learned better if your textbooks were in Igbo? Most of us can't even write properly in our local languages. So how are you going to learn a complex subject that is written in this language that you struggle to read and write in? How many of us can casually read a simple Igbo news article without struggling? Or you forget that we do most of our learning by reading? Now imagine having to not just read but study a technical textbook written in this language. If at all, for this to work, our indigenous languages would first have to take the place of English in the country. You can't be a good student if you don't have a firm grasp of the language of instruction both in the spoken and in the written form. So, for instance, Igbo language would have to be mandated and prioritised above all subjects starting from primary schools like we do with English language. If you don't pass the subject, you don't get promoted. This way, by the time students are at secondary level, they can read and write properly in the language. Then, perhaps, we can start considering using the language to learn science subjects like physics. 3 Likes |
