As Ex-Sierra Leone President Koroma escapes for Nigeria on asylum today instead of facing treason charges in his country

Controversy yesterday trailed the decision of the president of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to relocate former Sierra Leonean President, Ernest Bai Koroma, to Nigeria today.

Touray added that the former President has accepted the offer to be hosted in Nigeria, and subject to approval, arrangements will be made to fly him out of Freetown today.

The former Sierra Leonean President was on Tuesday charged with four counts of treason in connection to an attempted coup and other crimes

However, Sierra Leone Foreign Minster Timothy Kabba told the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) the government did not support the proposal to relocate Koroma, which he described as a proposition by the ECOWAS Commission President.

But, Touray’s statement on Koroma’s relocation to Nigeria, titled: “Temporary relocation of former President to Abuja”, reads: “I am pleased to inform Your Excellency that , the government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has offered to host His Excellency Ernest Bal Koroma, former President of Sierra Leone, in Abuja.

“The former President has accepted the offer to be hosted In Nigeria. Subject to your approval, arrangements will be made to fly former President Koroma out of Freetown on Thursday, 4th January.”

Koroma was President for 11 years until 2018, when incumbent President, Julius Maada Bio, was elected.

The former president’s daughter, Dankay Koroma, has previously been named on a list of wanted suspects by the police. She has not commented.

Na waa o.

Why bringing him to Nigeria? He should stay in his country and face the law. Nigeria is not a hiding place for criminals. Before it was Charles Taylor. This one again.....

The incumbent Maada Bio will be glad Koroma is leaving the country permanently as this is one of the only way he can govern in peace without having to watch his back.

The Pac president still has supporters in the military and in the public eye. His continued stay and trial will only cause distraction for the government

Bio might not sanction it.

Yesterday, a 4-count charge was slammed on the former President.

He definitely will sanction it. A former president in a volatile country like that is too big to be put on trial for a capital offence. Not when Koroma has so many supporters and Bio himself is accused of rigging. Koroma cant be put on trial and he also cant be allowed to stay a free man in Sierra Leone. This is the best political solution.

Charles Taylor, the ex Liberian warlord also was granted asylum somewhere in Calabar by a Nigeria's ex president until he was tried by ICJ. I guess he's still languishing in jail at Hague

That is the reasonable thing to do but this letter is a reminder to Bio. That means he had a knowledge of this letter yet pushed this case from Magistrate in a jiffy a day before Koroma was expected to leave for Nigeria. Don't forget he was granted bail but must remain in Sierra Leone under house arrest and case adjourned until Jan 17.

Again, whilst he was President, Koroma illegally sacked his Vice, Siddique Sam-Sumana for taking assylum at the US Embassy in Freetown after soldiers surrounded his house. The ECOWAS Court ruled it was illegal yet Koroma said ECOWAS lacks the jurisdiction and competence to adjudicate on National matters.

Today, Bio is saying the same thing. His only aim is to disgrace the ex-President... The conditions for bail are below:-
