Graduating students of IMT, ‘v staged a peaceful demonstration, demanding their inclusion in Batch C of the NYSC 2011. The more than 100 students carried placards & matched to the state House of Assembly, where they called for the urgent intervention of the lawmakers. The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), had recently withdrawn the accreditation of the institute. Spokesman for the students, Mr Festus Eluke, said b/4 d NBTE’s action, they had been mobilized & given call-up numbers that would enable them participate in d scheme. He noted with regret that instead of collecting their call-up letters for d NYSC orientation programme scheduled for Nov 15, they were informed that they had been put on hold. He said: “If IMT management commits any offence against NBTE, it should be punished & not d students.”Addressing the students, Sunday Ude-Okoye, the House Majority Leader, commended them for d peaceful manner in which they conducted themselves. He assured them that the state govt would contact d management of IMT & take appropriate measures to resolve d issue. The Institute's Acting Director of Student Affairs, Sylvanus Asogwa said d school management was already looking into the students' predicament, but confirmed that the students would no longer be part of d Batch 'C' service year. He, however, said efforts would be made to re-register the affected students for the next NYSC batch, as soon as negotiations with d NBTE are concluded.
