Harsh economy will only grind the wheel of production to a halt

This is about the failure to contend with the growing economic environment. I said it here earlier that the closer of some foreign multinational like P and G, GSK, Nestle is due to Nigerian preference for cheap and low quality product. To every Lux, there is premier cool, Kasmo and other product. To every Omo, there is Waw, good mama, So easy and other. These companies should have found a way of approaching the market in a new way, after all, they are richer and possess the resources to mobilize the best brain.

Keep in mind that those companies have had monopoly over the years, their financial muscle is huge based on funding from their home office.

At some point in our lives when we wanted to mention soap for washing clothes, it was referred to as Omo.

Let them leave, allow Emeka from Onitsha, Kunle from Abeokuta, Musa from Kano be able to sell millions of these soap monthly.

Economy will grow.

U say that as if theres someone preventing them from being competitive or taking advantage. So tell me is it better to import those products people love to buy?

Welcome development, now indigenous companies can now take advantage of the situation.

They've already taken advantage of the situation. That's what's driving the companies away.

These products weren't the same again as they were few years ago .
There are now better alternatives in the market.

As expected, Unilever Nigeria refused to invest in research and development, Lux and Omo produced locally hardly made any improvement unlike what we see in other countries where innovation drives sales.

Who uses those low quality products anymore when there are far better alternatives in other brands.

how did Unilever not invest in research and development?

how did Lux and omo not make any improvement?

what was the improvement you were expecting them to make?

how are omo and lux low quality products?

Looking at it dispassionately, I am not surprised.

When I was a child, Omo and Elephant were the KINGS of detergent in Nigeria. As for toilet soaps, it was Lux, then Cussons Imperial Leather, followed by Premier.

Today, there are all sorts of brands out there. Dettol, Dudu-osun, Tetmosol, Premier, etc etc. Then since the 1990's, there has been an invasion of foreign brands into the country too. Irish Spring was, some thirty years ago, something seen in shops like Leventis, at high prices. Today, it is seen everywhere.

As for detergent...Ariel, Klin, etc, etc, plus a slew of imported brands.

I can't remember the last time I used Omo detergent to wash clothes, and as for Lux, it has been centuries since I last used Lux. (It's been over 4 years since I last used Cussons.).

Unilever has been knocked out of the market. Where they used to sell over 50% of the market, they now sell less than 20%. I don't even see Lux soap that much these days. Once upon a time, it was everywhere.

Even Omo, made in Nigeria omo, is competing with imported Omo.

I kind of feel sad they are gone. Well, we would always have Blue band (even though I don't take it anymore...it's for kids.).

According to FreeStuffsNG and his co-travellers, Nigeria will turn into Switzerland in a matter of days now. Food is cheap and the naira is stronger than ever at an all time low price of 1360/$

Dangote will sell us fuel at the price of #50/lt soon and a bag of rice will go back to the 8k it was selling for when Jonathan was intimidated out of office barely 9 years ago.

It's not even been up to a decade since nigerians decided to give the APC a chance, yet look at how much ruin our country is in. When some of us speak out, it will look as if we like it when bad things happen to our country, but that's very far from the truth! We only console ourselves with making mockery of APC supporters stupidity. We know all too well that whatever terrible consequence the APC government's incompetence brings to the table, we will all partake in it!

It just feels like yesterday, Buhari came in promising Eldorado. But upon seeing that it isn't as easy as Jonathan made it look, they decided to devise a means that will ensure that Nigerians don't give them the Ghadaffi treatment>>>> TRIBALISM. It worked so well, and ever since then, the APC has become invincible. No matter how low they sink this country, mark my words, they will always get away with it! At this point, someone has to step in or else...
Anyone waiting for a revolution is just wasting his time. All the APC has to do is pay Sam Larry and his thugs to infiltrate whatever protest or revolution and cause mayhem. Or if that doesn't work, give the revolution a tribal colouration and voila! people will throw their common sense out the window. God bless Nigeria.

That freestuff person is the most daft person I have ever seen. How can a grown man be so stupid is what I can't comprehend. I really hope he's pretending because he's worthy of Brain shock therapy.

Omo still dey market? Can't remember the last time I saw the product in the market. They should have rebranded instead of stopping the production. Bringing back the blue color of the detergent would have been nostalgic

I might look for Omo again, just for nostalgia.

Nowadays, Ariel is everywhere in the Nigerian market. In 1989, Ariel would have been 1) available in only posh shops like Leventis, and Kingsway 2) probably imported.

They can no longer compete. It's been very very long I saw omo last. Many detergents out there.Thekr market share has reduced from about 90% to less than 10%

Indeed.

As a child, if we were looking for detergent it was Omo (Super blue Omo, washes brighter and it shows!) and Elephant.

Now it is Ariel, So Klin, and a host of others.

The other day, I saw importedOmo at a supermarket. For G-d's sake!

Close up is still very popular...they even have a new advertising campaign out (Now with Zinc for better protection).

But yeah, there are all sorts of brands...out there. When i was young it was close up, pepsodent, snow white, and daily need (basically close up copy).

Unilever Nigeria says it has stopped
production and sales of home care and skin cleansing products — 10 months after the company announced plans to exit both markets.

The company disclosed this in its unaudited interim financial statements for the year ended December 31, 2023, published on the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) on Wednesday.

On March 17, 2023, Unilever Nigeria revealed its intention to discontinue production of its homecare and skin-cleansing brands, which include Omo, Sunlight and Lux.

In a statement in the company’s earnings report, Unilever Nigeria said production and sales “ceased in December 2023”.

Unilever said the factory used to produce the home care and skin cleansing products has been leased out to a third party.

“Subsequent to the company’s exit from the Home Care and Skin Cleansing categories, the factory buildings have been leased to a third party for a duration of 10 years, with annual rental payments,” the company said.

Unilever Nigeria’s exit from the homecare and skin-cleansing markets leaves the company with just the foods, beauty and wellbeing, as well as personal care products.

Prior to Unilever Nigeria’s exit from both markets, the company reported a decline in revenue and an increase in losses.

Revenue fell by 45.1 percent year-on-year to N16,48 billion in 2023, from N23,92 billion grossed between January to December 2022.

Also, loss increased to N3.72 billion last year, compared to the previous year’s N1.49 billion.

Okay.

LOL. I bought dollar at 1341 naira at allen avenue today. my mallam friend said it's because he had known me for long, that he sells higher than that rate to others. Imagine. One thing about those supporting this directionless administration is that, they are the main casualties but pretending everything is alright.
