fergie001: ^^^ OK... Not quite what I expected to read in the profile or citation of an NSE president... fergie001: ^^^ A lot more detail on her contributions to thought leadership in the practice of engineering in Nigeria is necessary. This just isn't enough. |

remsonik: ^^^ Fair observation. This investiture was an opportunity to vividly demonstrate what 'the engineer at work' is all about but sadly, it wasn't utilized. We all agree that culture is important. However, this investiture really wasn't the place to showcase white horsetails, traditional drums, praise singers and all of that. This NSE president is important because she is an engineer first of all...and she is the first female NSE president. As you have rightly said, those key facts should have been emphasized by showcasing Engr. Oguntala in her workplace...doing what chemical engineers do. Unfortunately we ended up with...what you saw in that video clip. This narrow, limited understanding of 'culture' is what leads to stuff like goat and ram sacrifices prior to routine maintenance work on 3rd Mainland Bridge...and that particular case demonstrates how 'culture' can indeed retard progress. Those carrying out these sacrifices don't know anything about stuff like load and tensile strength (and they don't care) on that bridge...but animal sacrifices must be made to 'appease' some malevolent 'deity' or another. We need to decide whether we want to get into the 21st century or not. https://www.nairaland.com/7966929/rams-sacrificed-ahead-third-mainland/5#127898402 https://www.nairaland.com/7967134/colleagues-response-killing-rams-3rd#127898149 For the sake of the NSE and its members, we all hope Engr. Oguntala is a consequential NSE president. The ball is in her court now. |
