Yes, annual leave include weekends. That's why in civil service, we either use 22 working days which is equivalent to 30 days annual leave. That is (A month/ four weeks - four Saturdays and Sundays) = 30 - (2*4) = 22

Your annual leave was supposed to be 21 working days. If its 28 working days, then may be that was why they added weekends.

If you work in a private firm and the firm decided to include weekends in the leave of their workers, then there is nothing you can do about it.

If when you are on annual leave and there comes a public holiday declared by the government
Then you will have to add that number of days declared as public holiday to your annual leave days

Leave days cannot jump Saturday and Sunday. You have to count it inside. Especially if your employment letter states calendar days.

If you have 28days as leave days, and you want to go on holiday for 2 weeks, the weekend is counted. You cannot jump the weekend. It is only if you want to go for say 5 days, that only Monday to Friday is counted.

It is only if your employment contracts states that your leave days are working days that you can jump weekend. In most cases, such leave days will be 21days in a year as opposed to those that gets 28days per annum.

Nothing like scam. It depends on the policy of each organisation. A lot of companies gives staff leave days as calendar days. If this is the case, you have to count the weekends with it.

It is only the public holidays that will be credited back to the staff.

Be guided accordingly or be prepared for a query. Commonn sense says you should confirm from old colleagues instead of coming here.

Since your employment letter states you work Mondays through Fridays then your vacation days should not include weekends. But in my place of work for example, the security men, though outsourced, have weekends counted in their leave days because they work on weekends.

Your annual leave does not include weekends and or public holidays. While applying for the leave state how many days leave you are to proceed, state the date your leave begins calculate the days and exclude weekends and public holidays state the date your leave end and your date of resumption. The problems I have come to realize about most employees is either they don't know there rights or they don't understand how it works. I have faced similar situations in the past and that's the approach I use since most of them are not wise enough to calculate their leave without holidays and weekends and I never had issues. In most cases the HR will be silence the moment they realize you don't know are to do the calculations.

In all the places I have worked, if I recall rightly, Annual Leave was for 20 days. That is equal to 4 weeks (5 days a week).

In your cases, they said it is 28 days. That suggests to me that they mean 7 days a week. That still amounts to 4 weeks.

I have not seen an annual leave in my 10 years of experience that exceeds one calendar month.

If you are insisting on having 28 week days as your leave excluding weekends, that means you will be away for one full month + one full week + 3 other days. That's excessive

Do you observe Federal Government Public Holidays in your place of work? If Yes, not only is your annual leave Mondays to Fridays only, you'll also need to add any such federal government holidays that falls within your leave period.

For instance, your annual leave is from December 11 to January January 17, that's the 28 days already, but because Federal Government declared 25th December (Monday), 26th December (Tuesday), 1st January (Monday), as public holidays within your stipulated leave period, you're authorized by Employment Law or Nigeria Labour Law, to add the three days, making the total number of your Leave days 31 working days (excluding the weekend). That means, instead of resuming on 18th January, you're required to resume on January 24th because there was also a weekend in-between.

The company is not doing you any favour. It's your statutory right as a Nigerian Worker. That's why I pray for people to get jobs in a well structured organizations, where they fully understand these principles and don't trample on the rights of their workforce!

And on your own, try Google and read Nigerian Labour Laws, especially the Employment Law, where the distinctions between the employer and the employee are vividly spelt out.

It is possible, but extremely rare. It all depends on what is offered on the employment letter.

How many days is the minimum statutory leave days in Nigerian Labour law? This is where you'll see that the employer is "doing a favour" in response to your post. But it is not actually a favour anyway, it is just to remain a competitive employer and be consistent with industry standards.

28 working days is 28 working week days

JAMB question.

What I remember from corporate days was a fourteen day leave meant two weeks. The weekends were included. Maybe it was because where I worked could call someone on a Saturday, hence the addition. Your twenty-eight days should mean a whole February of a non-leap year. Nothing extra.

Your annual leave should not include weekend (Saturday and Sunday).
Also, if there happens to be any public holiday that falls within that period, it will be treated as a non working day(just like Sat and Sun)
