The problem with the Naira today is not that it was or has been “floated”. In any case, we no longer have the oil revenues (for various reasons) to underpin a managed float with robust foreign reserves.

The real failure of Nigerian economic policy is that of having failed to diversify its economy away from reliance of natural resources for forex supply towards an export economy based on value-added manufacturing and services.

This is the zone of industrial and trade policy. The reason for this failure lies in Nigeria’s political culture that fosters a rentier economy.

Habits, especially bad ones, are hard to break. But Malaysia, Thailand and Chile, all originally resource based economies, successfully achieved “economic complexity” over time, manufacturing and exporting increasingly sophisticated products.

For Nigeria to achieve this will require what its present generation of politicians appear to lack, for you cannot give what you do not have. The level of political will required to change course is extraordinary, and requires a focus on merit and competent technocratic management rather than crony- empowerment based on vested self interest.

Until these fundamentals are fixed, there is little hope for the Naira. The world has changed from the days of our being awash with oil money. Many other countries that are not in OPEC now produce massive amounts of oil.

Ajaokuta steel is lying there abandoned and not active, that alone can solve a whole lot of mess in Nigeria but it must be only oil.

Youth of the country are still sleeping, the few ones in position to make a solid statement are worse than the old corrupt leaders.

When we are all ready for revolution, you can call on me for support.

Meanwhile we should keep praying for asiwaju to succeed because he obviously has good intentions for Nigeria.

This is precisely what I have been talking about on the other thread.

This was my comment/response to @Datedoboy in that thread below:

Angelfrost:

This is impressive, lengthy, yet shockingly lacking.

You ended up being thrifty with the real truth (or maybe you don't know it).

Check the 70s and 80s... Why was the Naira stronger then??! Answer: Low importation compared to high levels of exported commodities.

Today, you literally import everything, and you pay in Dollars! Your demand for the Dollars is astronomical!

This has nothing to do with Dom accounts or people saving in Dollars... That's a secondary symptom of the main ailment.

Create a strong demand for the Naira by drastically cutting down on importation, starting with the main culprit "Fuel", and watch the Naira massively appreciate.

With the appreciation of the Naira, people will save more in Naira and no longer see the need to hold on to foreign currencies.

So please, quit going after symptoms or easy targets instead of curing the disease! Lead and the masses will follow!...

Dom accounts didn't crash the Naira... The crashing of the Naira gave rise to an increasing need to save in Dollars.

I did not vote for Tinubu but truth be told, he seems to have good intentions. I am 100% obidient but since court has decided, I have to support him, if he succeeds, it's for the good of all of us. I have entirely nothing to gain if he fails.

There is no need to start using big big grammars to explain the obvious stupidity and uselessness of the most populous dark nation.

Even an average JSS3 Student will explain this issue flawlessly. It's simple ECONOMICS.

There is nothing you can do when you have useless and stupid beings in corridors of POWER and to cap it all highly Ignoramus and docile citizens.

Yes it happens, Not all Power Grabbers are Highly Intellect.

And the Westerners and Asians are capitalizing and leveraging on the Stupidity, Insatiable Greed and Uselessness of these current Power Grabbers.

Na who go see SURE MUGUNs wey hin no go leverage and manipulate themgrin

For me the problem of the Naira is NNPCL. That organization is so deep in secrecy that no one knows what is happening there.
How is it that a private limited company (as NNPCL is now called) is the one receiving the drilling, exporting, and collecting of oil revenues in dollars on behalf of Nigeria without accountability to anyone. No audit nothing. Buhari refuse to appoint a petroleum minister and Tinubu have refuse to do same. What is going on in NNPCL. Where is the dollar they are exchanging for our oil money going.

Do we not also need funds to diversify the economy?

There is nothing wrong with having oil and mineral revenues. What we need is to utilize them efficiently.

We were all here when Donald Duke did Tinapa, Obudu Cattle Ranch and even brought Miss World hosting to Nigeria. But religious extremists made a mess of the hosting of Miss World. In addition, Duke's successors refused to build and consolidate on the foundation of Duke.

We see how Lagos earns revenue from service industry. What are the other state governments doing to earn revenue for their states?

Mostly nothing. Tinubu is expected to solve all the problems.
Some state governments destroy alcohol but still collect the money earned from VAT charged on alcohol sold in other states. Development is also elusive when you live with people who are retrogressive in their thinking. At this stage of our national life, Senator Ali Ndume and his co-travellers are insisting that some departments of CBN and the headquarters of FAAN must stay in Abuja without advancing sensible arguments to even show they are competent in thinking.

Instead of developing mining resources, state governments seemingly cooperate with illegal miners to steal from their own people, and even kill them.

Look at insecurity. Instead of setting up local vigilante to solve the problem, state governments want the President to come and solve their problems for them.

The problem of the naira is that state governments are mostly unproductive. Hold them to account.

Ah...

"Political will power"

What the druggie and his group of bandits lack.

You can't give what you don't have. Nigeria is so untapped especially the non oil sectors.

Just try exporting anything from the country and see the level of corruption, bottlenecks and unnecessary delays you'll experience and you won't try it again.

These old men that went to school free are closing and unearthing the road so others won't even go there atoll.

Thunder fire all urchinz anyway!

We all know the problem, how do we solve it in a non textbook manner. I run a manufacturing business, we have 3 phase equipments and voltage sensitive single phase equipments. For months now we don't get complete 3 phases and even the single phase is not 220v. So to run efficiently, we have to do so on diesel, that alone has taken the competitive edge. Manufacturing is not about being indigenous, it's about how competitive you can be, the main reason multinational manufacturing plants are closing down is because they can't effectively compete in global space.
