Yes, but it will discourage investment in housing development because it won't be easy for the landlords save up quote author=Ikem11 post=128156303] It is a good development... collecting monthly or yearly still boils down to same amount only that it's more easier for tenant to pay and up to the landlord to save.[/quote] |

Nobody is bitter about it,my concern is that it will discourage investment in housing development and that will worsen the housing deficit issue in the country, if the government can not provide funding for housing development or build houses for mortgage to her citizens ,they don't have moral justification to tell landlords who struggle to build his house how to collect his or her rent . A ton of iron is N650,000 to do foundation only you should be talking about minimum of 10million and there's no way you will complete building without borrowing. mastermaestro: |

Monthly rent in a country where workers can go three months without being paid. How many employers both governments and private sector pay salary before month end?? Abi make tenant go borrow money pay. This is putting the cat before the horse. He should first propose a bill for every employer of labour in Nigeria to pay salary on or before 27th of every month. 1 Like |

SeunBilton:Nigeria, the only country in Africa, perhaps in the world, where tenants pay rent in a year or many years in advance. Govt hardly provides houses for citizens to rent or buy. If the govt makes the law, who is to defend the law? |
Re: Senator Nwoko Initiates Bill On Monthly Payment Of Rent by Theoarhics: 11:12pm On Jan 27 |
Most of those senators will not support the bill cos most of them are guilty of the so called one year rent thing |

I stayed in Istabul ,Turkey for 2 years . Most landlords if not all don't accept monthly payment anymore . The best one you will see is 6 months . The proposed monthly payment will cause hike in the rent I bet it with everyone .. All this people are out of ideas .there are better bills he can present rather than all this . 1 Like |

Re: Senator Nwoko Initiates Bill On Monthly Payment Of Rent by StarRida: 11:41pm On Jan 27 |
Even in Bénin Republic our neighboring country they pay 3 months or 4 months depends your agreement with your Landlord in most cases if you pay 3 months you start paying on monthly basis after a month elapses if it's 4 months you also starts paying after a month or two months elapses depending on the agreement and it's ok like that because it will enable most idle landlords to smile to Thier banks every month and also becomes easy for the tenants to pay it monthly I think it's a welcome development |
Re: Senator Nwoko Initiates Bill On Monthly Payment Of Rent by Bestman66: 11:42pm On Jan 27 |
The big guy are the landlords including him. The monthly payment will favour them, it will lead to increase in rent. Quit notice will be short. Rent will almost be calculated like hotels. 1 Like |

Wrong bill !!! Many will be homeless if monthly payment is allowed. This Senator does not know Nigerians are suffering at all! Monthly rent is only good in a country with stable good economy and high employment rate. 1 Like |

iLoveYouToo:All round nonsense conclusions! As a landlord were you forced by a law to demand yearly rent from your tenants? And as a tenant, what stopped you from looking instead for rental property that require maybe even month-to-month payment? NIGERIANs ehn. There are properties out there that even operate month to month rent contracts, though not many, why not opt for those? Why does Nigeria need a law to cause people to do what people ought to be freely to choose for themselves? |
Re: Senator Nwoko Initiates Bill On Monthly Payment Of Rent by Kobojunkie: 11:53pm On Jan 27 |
12345baba:You can even charge monthly even without a law requiring it. So why is there a need for a law to impose what should be a choice made between business and the demand chain. |
Re: Senator Nwoko Initiates Bill On Monthly Payment Of Rent by Kobojunkie: 11:54pm On Jan 27 |
MadamExcellency:This is utter nonsense. You for try also convincing us that the financial planning go somewhere make renters rich top while you are at it. The imposition of monthly rental contracts is totally unnecessary. The decision of whether the contract should be annual or monthly should be determined by the business and the customers. Government should have no right making that decision on behalf of Nigerians. It can instead work on strengthening rental laws to make them easier, more meaningful, and accessible to both landlords and renters. But Government, especially that of Nigeria should not not determining the contract that should apply in any case. |

Kobojunkie: Being compelled to cough up 1-2 years rent isn't easy for most people especially considering the state of the economy today. Depending on how you look at it, it's even better for the landlords if you factor in inflation. Your stand is too rigid No matter how long we banter on about this it won't affect the eventual outcome |
