ECOWAS is not a subset of the AU...its a parrallel structure. Also, CAF has nothing to do with either ECOWAS or the AU.

AU is the general body of all Africans state, while ECOWAS is strictly for West Africans states. If all things being equal, you can't be a member of AU if you are not a member of ECOWAS. All ECOWAS are AU members but not all AU members are ECOWAS members.

Ergo, West African countries also are members of African Union, even though both organizations are independent of each other.
