FACT CHECK: Is It True Atiku Doesn’t Empathize With Residents, Oyo State Govt. After Explosion?


The Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde's statement about the flagbearer of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during the 2023 presidential election, Atiku Abubakar on not yet reached out to him over the recent explosion in Ibadan is trending on social media, and all major news dissemination platforms since Monday evening.

Makinde, a member of the PDP, made this disclosure while thanking the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi who visited him to commiserate with the people of Oyo state. He said, only his party candidate, Atiku Abubakar is left to call him to sympathize.

”I want to thank you especially for the visit. Out of the 3 major candidates who contested the 2023 election, only Atiku Abubakar, my leader, and our candidate haven’t called to commiserate the state,” Makinde said in the video which has gone viral on social media.

“I am saying this openly so that our leaders will know that we have time for politics and others. I want to thank you once again for coming,” Makinde said.

Verification

Preliminary investigations by Westerndailynews revealed that Atiku Abubakar made a condolence message about the Ibadan explosion, less than 24 hours after its occurrence, where he shared his commiseration and empathy with the good people and government of Oyo State over the incident.

Atiku on January 17, expressed condolences through his verified Facebook page to the people and government of Oyo State concerning the blast.

Atiku in his Facebook post of January 17 said “I wish to express my condolences to the good people and government of Oyo State over the explosion that rocked the capital city of Ibadan late yesterday night.

“While the government continues to provide humanitarian support to victims of the explosion, I commiserate with the families of those who might have lost their lives and property to the explosion.”

Verdict

It is on record that on the 17th of January, His Excellency Atiku Abubakar made a widely available message on the Ibadan incident.

Conclusion

Having reviewed the facts about whether Alhaji Atiku Abubakar did or did not sympathize with the people of Oyo state and the government after the unfortunate explosion on January 16th.
