Sectarian violence almost erupted at Gwarimpa Estate, Abuja on Sunday when one Pastor Ernest Onyems of the Shore House Church narrowly escaped being lynched by Muslim youths who were offended by his comments over the use of a road as praying ground for the Sallah celebration.

Before policemen deployed in the area to provide security intervened, the cleric was thoroughly beaten before he managed to jump a fence into a house in the area.

Our correspondent, who was at the scene, observed the youths, who were chanting Allahu Akbar (God is great), forced their way into the compound where Onyems took refuge and attempted to drag him out.

The policemen prevented the mob from dragging him out and vandalising his car.

Trouble began when the pastor, who was on his way to church in his Mercedes Benz 190, was trapped by the gridlock caused by the blockade of the road.

Angered by his inability to find his way out of the logjam, Onyems described their action as unreasonable.

"I don’t know why these Muslims would just abandon their cars on the road because they want to pray; this kind of thing cannot happen in Lagos, there would have been a riot," he was heard shouting at the top of his voice.

The cleric had hardly made another comment when some youths abandoned their prayers and accosted him. He was not given a chance to speak as they pounced on him, dragging him by his tie.

Onyems struggled to break free from the youths and jumped over the fence into a compound. But the angry youths went after him and continued the beating injuring him in the face and other parts of the body.

The police officers came to his rescue and pacified the angry youths who threatened to go on the rampage to attack whoever dared to insult Islam.

The cleric was so frightened that he refused to leave the building long after the youths had left.

He told our correspondent that he lost his two GSM phones and N6,000 during the attack.

"I didn’t know that these people could just attack me because I criticised them for blocking a public road; they really wanted to kill me but for providence," Onyems lamented.

The pastor who was too weak to drive was subsequently escorted by the police officers to the Gwarimpa Police Station where he lodged a complaint on the incident.

One of the policemen (name withheld) said many of the youths had earlier bought knives from knife hawkers that came to the prayer ground, adding that he and his colleagues were powerless to arrest the youths because they were armed and dangerous.

Nigerians, Christians and Muslims alike, block the roads in the name of worship or prayers. Some even host parties on the roads.

The lack of discipline runs through all the groups. Let's not forget the noise pollution with which they rob people of peace and sleep in their homes.

The ease with which many Nigerians go for violence is worrisome. The pastor should not have been beaten. Afterall, he didn't attack them.

what the attackers did was clearly excessive and deplorable. that said, i dont understand people's intolerance of on-road worshippers. i assume this happens once a week, and only for a couple of hrs or so at most. it's nothing more than a minor inconvenience. simply turn back and use alternate roads. people getting totally worked up & telling the rest of us how such things can't happen in new york, london or timbuktu, is meaningless. our cultures and way of life are different. the suggestion that praying on the road is barbaric is uninformed. thankfully, on-road praying is still uncommon. where/when it happens, our tolerant side should accommodate the resulting inconvenience and move on.

@bolded,

True the pastor didn't attack them but in fact, he did worse.

From their perverse POV, the pastor's statement was a direct attack on their religion via-a-viz, islam.

And according to their Religiousl Laws, the punishment for such an attack on the religion of the prophet Muhammed, is DEATH by LYNCHING

The mob were going for his dumb ar.ss, they were just warming up before they finally relieve his body of his empty infidel's head.

But ISLAM IS A PEACEFUL RELIGION.

Blocking the road for religious reasons is just insane and if not illegal, should be made illegal. Wetin concern most commuters with Sallah or any other religious occasion?

Also, was this man's comment enough for him to be beaten?

Useless police for not arresting and jailing every one in that mob.
Re: Muslim Youths Batter Pastor Over His Comment On Road Blockage On Sallah Day by FindOut(m): 9:43am On Nov 09, 2011
This is a very unfortunate incident, Even tho i sense a little bit of sensationalism in the report. But the so-called muslim youths who carried out the attack have a heap on sin on their heads. Muslims are supposed to be tolerant & should NEVER resrt to violence except in self defence. And for those who may see this as an opportunity (there are soo many these days anywy, thanks to BH) to take a swipe at Islam or Prophet Muhammad (SAW), please be informed that during the time of the Prophet, there are many instances where unbelievers(i mean idol wprshippers proper sef) attacked the prophet physically and verbally. Yet, the calm response of the Prophet to these attacks made many of them to eventually accept Islam.
E.g. During the time of the Prophet, an unbeliever came and URINATED right beside the mosque ostensibly to provoke the muslims while the Prophet and his companions were inside (remember that in those days, many public ''buildings'' were more or less without walls, especially in hot Arabia). The Companions asked the Prophet what they should do, and the Prophet asked them to call the man & tell him politely that this is a mosque and his action was uncalled for. The unbeliever was surprised at this reaction and immediately accepted Islam.

Another example was that of a woman who made it a point of duty every morning to place sharp objects on the path the Prophet used to take to the mosque, and rain abuses on him as he and his companions passed by. One day, she wasnt there and the sharp objects were not there. The next day, the same thing happened. The Prophet inquired after her and was told that she was ill. He made further enquiries at to her address, and went with his companions to visit her and pray for her. Needless to say, after she got better, she accepted Islam wholeheartedly.

I wonder what present day muslims (who claim to love the Prophet & Islam more than anything) would have done in the instances above and many more like them.

The major attribute which the Prophet used to spread the message of Islam was his excellent character towards muslims and non-muslims. & we are expected and required to emulate these actions of the Prophet. Therefore, Islam stands for peace, the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW) stood for peace, with his message of Islam (its not a coincidence that Islam does indeed mean peace) but its unfortunate that many of his followers have turned his teachings upside down, thereby building a nest to lay and hatch their eggs of violence.

'Only a couple of hours' is not a big deal to you?!
Thankfully, unlike you most of us are employed and place a premium on our time. This has nothing to do with 'culture' and everything to do with intolerance of the people who would park their cars on the road and obstruct others going about their duties.

See your mouth like 'minor inconvenience'. Please save up and buy a car so that when you finally experience a traffic jam with tens of cars in front and behind you, you will tell us all how you'll 'turn your car around and find an alternative route'.

I have read the Koran as independent mind, what I saw was a religion that is so tied to violence as a way to propagate. It is a shame.

It is either the Prophet did not hear from God or he outrightly told a lie.

Wow, did I say that? Is there a fatwa on me now?
If islam is a religion from God, I think the attitude you should be to prove that I am wrong rather than than condemn me to death.

And churches don't make the worst noises during night vigil? or on Sundays?

Now I used the above example because the victim of his own insensitivity is a pastor.

Have you been to barking market? Umm a better example is Premier league matches which sometimes demands the closing of roads in big matches,

Look, you have no argument here, the pastor was insensitive or just being a hater, No where in the article did it say every week it said sallah celebration and that ain't every week,

what makes you think i meant only moslems with that comment

my main grouse is that you are comparing festivals like nothing hill carnival(annual event) to worship days (weekly affair)  with respect to obvious inconveniences.

sallah might just be the final nail to the pastors mind but if you know abuja well fridays there are almost always like that.

And no where did it say they do it every week, And your first reply to my first comment obviously gave out your stand. Sallah is a yearly event so comparing it to another yearly event in this context is not logically flawed ok?

How did you know sallah was the blah blah that pissed the pastor off? Was that said in the article? or was it a supporting logic for your vague stand?

Don't you need a permit for all of these things? Randomly blocking the road without getting a permit from the city and paying a fee would probably get me jailed. . .

Yea you need a permit but the end is still the road gets blocked. And no one knows whether those people have a permit or not. But i do know you don't need a permit during something that is culturally supported by the majority of the people in a city or town,

For instance, you can't tell New Yorkers to go get a permit for the Time ball event in Time square every 31st of December, During Fire works, The people don't ask for permit to celebrate, so Sallah analogically falls in this category,

Majority of Northerners are Muslims and they don't need a permit to celebrate their thing on the street,
Re: Muslim Youths Batter Pastor Over His Comment On Road Blockage On Sallah Day by ektbear: 2:00am On Nov 10, 2011
There is a difference, even though the end result is the same. One is legal, the other is not. And that matters.

I am almost 100% certain that whoever throws the new year's eve ball in NYC gets a permit first.

Majority of northerners may be Muslim, but Abuja is not necessarily majority Muslim. For all we know there are more Christians there, tbh.

Majority or not, you cannot flout the law and inconvenience even a minority.

Ohh please,   The day the New York time ball is disrupted because of permit will be the death of the mayor's political ambition,

Go tell Canadians they need a permit on Canada day to block a section of their cities to celebrate,

Yes Majority of Abuja is Muslim let's not try to bring religious options into it. There is nothing wrong with Abuja being a Muslim majority city. It is highly unlikely for Abuja to be anything but a Majority Muslim city considering it is surrounded by Muslim majority towns and cities. By demography, Most Northerners are Muslims and it is easier for a NORTHERNER to move to Abuja than it is for Southerners so I would find it highly probable that the majority of people moving to Abuja from surrounding states are Muslims and it easier for them to move too,

Now, when the tea parties use private parks for their protests, they had permits but when they take it to the streets, and even to the White house, they needed no permits to do that in fact the government provides security,   Roads get shut down every where,

man-loving-men don't need a permit during man-lover parades,  Seriously, come to New York and you'll see why people like the subways even when it is filthy,

If anyone really want to present an argument, it should be about the rights of the violated man not whether those people have a right to be there or not,
Re: Muslim Youths Batter Pastor Over His Comment On Road Blockage On Sallah Day by ektbear: 2:29am On Nov 10, 2011
Nobody has a right to block a public road, without prior permission from the relevant authorities.

There is no way to justify this. . . I don't see any reason to discuss this further if you don't get this basic point.

Regarding the demographics of Abuja, w/o a census, know one will know. But I would not be surprised if there are as many Christians there as Muslims.
