The Cement Producers’ Association of Nigeria, CEPAN, has expressed readiness to support the President Bola Tinubu administration in reducing the price of cement in 30 days.

The Chairman of CEPAN, Prince David Iweta, told The Tribune on Monday that the current hike in price of the product is due to production being overwhelmed by demand.

He said the association had alerted the Federal Government about the ramifications and probable outcomes of assigning the responsibility of producing and providing for the cement requirements of more than 200 million individuals to a select group with privileges.

“What we are seeing today is a case of demand clearly outweighing supply and we in the association knew it would come to this because there is no way the few players in the industry can meet the cement needs of Nigerians.

“If you remember, the association had earlier warned, even when the commodity was still as low as N3,000 that in the nearest future, it would sell for as high as N9,000 if certain steps were not taken.

“Why we were saying that then was to ginger the government to take action and avert this mess that we are all in today,” he said.

Importing cement on the short run. But the issue about importing on the short run is that, it's going to be very expensive because of the high exchange rate.

We are not producing enough cement in Nigeria. We need more cement manufacturers in Nigeria

Hear talk? What a criminal excuse! That's price gouging. Government should penalize them. Nigerians were thinking that the reason for the sharp increase was related to inflation or dollar scarcity. Which stupid increase in demand are they referring to? This is unacceptable plain and simple economic sabotage.

I thought Nigeria was self sufficient in cement production that we even export to neighboring countries.

How has demands outstripped supply especially at this time when the few disposable income of the masses is plowed into buying of food?

This guy should please tell us another story!

It was a policy on paper.

I don't know of any ongoing major road project that is causing shortfall in cement availability as we speak.

If the 2nd Niger bridge didn't cause supply drought, which road is causing the scarcity?

The cement cartel are not telling us the truth yet.

.

Look at this man. So because of this, you guys decied to increase the price of cement just because only a few or select few are producing. This is the same artificial crisis i was talking about even in the market. The traders are deliberately increasing prices of commodities in the market every hour of the day. The same item on the same day has a different price at 8:00am, 12:00noon and 4:00pm.

Humans are just being wicked.

Cement manufacturers had to increase prices in order to pay their workers higher wages to refect increasing cost of living & to remain in business.

However the % increase in price was too much, but that's what you get in a monopoly.
So Govt needs to deregulate that sector & encourage more cement players.

Then open the borders! Let people import this thing ,if demand has outweighed supply! For crying out loud ,it's an essential commodity! Open the borders , for food ,cement, and all our essentials.

200million isn't 200,000 !
