The National Economic Council (NEC) convened its 139th monthly meeting virtually in Abuja, chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima. The council made a bold decision to address food security and put an end to economic challenges facing the nation.

Measures discussed included making fertilizer available to farmers and establishing Agro-Rangers to tackle insecurity on farms. Additionally, NEC urged state governors to adopt modern agricultural practices for increased productivity.

Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Abubakar Kyari presented on food security in the country, leading Shettima to direct a meeting with major fertilizer producers such as Indorama, Dangote, and Notore.

Council also considered short-term measures like creating Agro-Rangers and long-term measures like establishing state police forces to address security threats against farmers. This was after Minister of Police Affairs Senator Ibrahim Geidam’s presentation.

In response to rising prices, the government plans to release 42,000 metric tonnes of food commodities from the National Strategic Reserve.

The Minister of Agriculture called for action against dollarization impacting negatively on fertilizer prices and agricultural productivity.

Vice President Shettima expressed hope that Nigeria will overcome its current economic challenges through collective efforts developing clear roadmaps via short-, medium-, and long-term strategies.

He acknowledged that Nigeria has suffered from strong averseness towards evolving with the changing global economic order but must redirect towards competitiveness or face inevitable consequences.

Delivering his opening speech titled “It’s Time To Speed Up Our Prosperity Quest,” VP Shettima emphasized standing together collectively proffering solutions safeguarding Nigeria’s economy from imminent implosion while enhancing “food availability and affordability.”

Shettima stressed that decisions must resonate with aspirations of common citizens who entrust leaders with their hopes/dreams amidst pervasive emergencies currently affecting Nigeria.

Will the Agro-Rangers be armed with Ak's to confront the armed Fulani terrorist herdsmen? ... anything short of that will be a waste of time and will just make them easy targets.
