OGUN Governor Ibikunle Amosun yesterday said that the state would focus its economic reform agenda on development of agriculture where it has comparative advantage. Amosun said this during the Ogun State Day at the ongoing 2011 Lagos International Trade Fair. He said that agriculture occupied a prominent position in its five cardinal programmes. “We intend to focus more on areas where we have comparative advantage, one of which is agriculture. “This is the reason why agricultural production and industrialisation occupy a prominent position in our administration’s five cardinal programmes. “We are set to lay a solid foundation for a vibrant, research-driven and mechanised farming and a technologically induced agro-based industry. “This way, we can surpass the achievements of our past leaders who made agriculture the mainstay of the economy,” he said. Amosun added that the state government anticipated an enduring partnership with investors in the agriculture sector. He said that the ongoing transformation of Lagos State had rubbed off on Ogun as investment destination due to its fertile land and access to local and international markets. The governor said the government had put up structures to correct weaknesses within the system and had also established an enduring framework aimed at achieving results. Mr. Bimbola Ashiru, the Ogun Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, said that the state was rich in cocoa, oil palm, rice, sugarcane and cassava plantations. He said that the state had the largest deposits of limestone, bitumen, gypsum, glass and granite in commercial quantities. According to him, the presence of Lafarge WAPCO and Dangote Cement are attestation to the state’s potential in the mining and extractive industry. http://nigerianobservernews.com/12112011/news/news7.html |
