What The Bible Say About Demons by 4Toluilori(m): 12:12am On Mar 24 |
The Bible does not say much about different types of demons. But, over the years, various writers of theological works have developed various classifications for demons as well as other information about them. One of the oldest is the pseudepigraphical Testament of Solomon. During the Middle Ages, written works dealing with demons multiplied, and demons were often classified based on the sins they promoted or other activities they engaged in. For instance, each of the “seven deadly sins” was said to have a specific demon behind it. The Bible is our only reliable source of information about demons, and the information it contains about them is sparse. The Bible says nothing directly about classifications or kinds of demons. Jesus mentions a unique “kind” of evil spirit in Mark 9:29, but He does not name it. Much of the information we have about demons is simply inferred from biblical passages in which they play a role. Christian ministries that focus on deliverance from demons place more emphasis on them than the Bible does. A detailed but highly speculative demonology has sprung up in some religious and Charismatic circles. Various evil spirits are dubbed as “Jezebels,” “pythons,” “Delilahs,” “mermaids,” “Absaloms,” etc. None of this is biblical. Scripture gives no reason to believe there are specific classes of demons or that Christians today have the gift of rebuking or exorcising them. Inventing such modern-day mythology is counterproductive to the cause of Christ. Perhaps the most extensive passage on spiritual warfare in the New Testament, Ephesians 6:10–18 (concerning the full armor of God), mentions that “our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” However, the emphasis here is on the weapons God provides for victory; there is no mention of techniques to bind or cast out the evil forces. While some see the beings mentioned (rulers, authorities, powers, and spiritual forces) as different classifications of demons, this is simply reading into the text more than it is telling us. From the biblical evidence, we infer that demons are fallen angels that followed Satan when he rebelled. Revelation 12 says that dragon (Satan) swept one third of the stars from heaven. However, the origin of demons is far from clear, and the conclusion that they are fallen angels is disputed by some. In Revelation 12:9, we read, “The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.” Likewise, in Matthew 25:41, Jesus says that on Judgment Day He will say to some people, “Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.” This may mean that the demons are fallen angels who fell when Satan did, or it might mean that demons are called “angels” in the basic sense that they are Satan’s “messengers” (the literal meaning of the word angels). With certainty we can say that demons are the messengers or minions of Satan. The word demon is not used in the Old Testament (although evil spirits are mentioned), but by the time of the New Testament, Jewish theologians had done a lot of speculating about them. The concept of demons or evil spirits was also common in other religious thought at the time. The gospels seem to assume that much of what was thought about demons at the time is true. We see Jesus casting out demons (e.g., Matthew 8:28–33), and we see that they are often responsible for causing physical illness, which Jesus healed by casting out the demon (e.g., Matthew 9:33). Paul tells us that demons are behind the worship of pagan gods and that a sacrifice to an idol is really a sacrifice to a demon (1 Corinthians 10:19–20). Whenever there are gaps in our knowledge, it is natural to want to fill them in. However, in the case of knowledge of demons, most of the “filler” information is unfounded and sometimes lurid speculation. We know that demons are evil spirits who, in concert with and following the directives of Satan, war against God and mankind. It is probably accurate to think of them as counterparts to the holy angels that minister to people on God’s behalf. We know that they have been defeated in principle by Christ on the cross and that their final destination will be eternal torment in a place prepared for them (Matthew 25:41). Amen. |

There is strong biblical evidence that a Christian cannot be demon possessed. The question then arises regarding what influence/power a demon can have over a Christian. Many Bible teachers describe demonic influence on a Christian as “demonic oppression” to distinguish it from possession. The Bible says that the devil seeks to devour believers (1 Peter 5:, and Satan and his demons “scheme” against Christians (Ephesians 6:11). As Satan attempted with Jesus (Luke 4:2), demonic forces tempt us to sin and oppose our efforts to obey God. Should a Christian allow the demons to succeed in these attacks, oppression results. Demonic oppression is when a demon is temporarily victorious over a Christian, successfully tempting a Christian to sin and hindering his ability to serve God with a strong testimony. If a Christian continues to allow demonic oppression in his/her life, the oppression can increase to the point that the demon has a very strong influence over the Christian’s thoughts, behavior, and spirituality. Christians who allow continuing sin open themselves up for greater and greater oppression. Confession and repentance of sin are necessary to restore fellowship with God, who can then break the power of demonic influence. The apostle John gives us great encouragement in this area: “We know that anyone born of God does not continue to sin; the one who was born of God keeps him safe, and the evil one cannot harm him” (1 John 5:18). For the Christian, the power for victory over and freedom from demonic oppression is always available. John declares, “The One who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world” (1 John 4:4). The power of the indwelling Holy Spirit (Romans 8:9) is always available to overcome demonic oppression. No demon, not even Satan himself, can prevent a Christian from surrendering to the Holy Spirit and thereby overcoming any and all demonic oppression. Peter encourages believers to resist the devil, “standing firm in your faith” (1 Peter 5:9). Being firm or steadfast in the faith means relying on the power of the Holy Spirit to successfully resist demonic influence. Faith is built up through the spiritual disciplines of feeding on the Word of God, persistent prayer, and godly fellowship. Strengthening our faith by these means enables us to put up the shield of faith with which we can “extinguish the flaming arrows of the evil one” (Ephesians 6:16). Amen. 1 Like |

4Toluilori: Demons are fallen angels! Before Noah's time only Satan rebelled against God's sovereignty as an angel but he later called the attention of his fellow angels who were loyally serving God to something they can't enjoy. Angels are like humans when it comes to intelligence but the difference between humans and angels is our physical body they are spirits with no bodily form while we have the body which defines our gender. So Satan proved to them that there's something they are missing and what's that? S€Z! Because they're all the same gender they can't enjoy sex therefore Satan tricked them into coming down and they began forming bodies for themselves their physic so much appeals to all the young females on planet earth back then so instead of asking of their origin at least to know where these highly intelligent, rich, handsome with superb strength young men came from all the young women they approached agreed to have sex with them without any formal introduction. Genesis 6:1-5 To cut the story short that was the first time FORNICATION was introduced to the human society before then each man will be introduced to the family of the young woman before sex but after the event that happened people started having sex indiscriminately before marriage. That was why God decided to end that generation with the flood as children born out of that unnatural mating became notorious giants disrupting the peace of the earth. Genesis 6:4 Apostle Peter later mentioned this in his letter to the Christians that these angels (spirits) were punished by been excommunicated in heaven and from that time they came back to the earth after the flood to become demons! 1Peter 3:19-20; 2Peter 2:4; Jude 1:6 |

Bestbrain123: God destroyed that generation not because humans were having sex indiscriminately but because angels were having sex with humans and bearing unnatural offsprings who were villains. So God brought the flood to end that unnatural mating and afterwards fallen angels couldn't return to heaven as angels anymore because they've been marked for destruction and so after the deluge they return to earth as Gods, they only dropped their fleshy bodies and left the earth during the deluge while all flesh perished. |
