Anambra State Government has adopted the United Nations (UN) stipulations for schools to end daily academic activities by 2.30pm.

Commissioner for Education, Prof Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, made this known Monday in a statement n Awka.

She said the adoption was in line with Governor Chukwuma Soludo's desire for school children to have adequate rest and interaction with their parents before the commencement of the next day's activities.

She charged all school Heads in the State to ensure closure of all daily academic activities by 2.30pm, to give room for the children to be at home by 3pm.

The Catholic Bishop of Awka Diocese, Most Rev. Paulinus Ezeokafor had expressed worry over long periods of time pupils spend in school, describing the practice as unhealthy to both the pupils and their parents.

The prelate who blamed teachers for the ugly development, lamented that the current education system makes it almost impossible for pupils to spend quality time with their parents as teachers engaged the pupils in lessons from 7am to 6pm.

He urged government to moderate the schools academic and extracurricular activities to enable pupils balance their studies with home training and other engagements.

Good move, the children need it...but trouble for working parents who close by 4pm. We'll be seeing more stay-at-home Dads and Mums now

This is the best thing this man has done in Anambra. Let him extend it to private schools.

The idea of staying in school until 5pm is something I can never understand

This is great.
This madness is finally been checked by someone. All that's done in most schools is stuffing children with another man's thinking process, taking all their time, when will they have time to evolve?
Now, they can have siesta, take afternoon shower, have time to watch the educative cartoons or games, relax, read and adequately prepare for the next day.
Good move by the governor

And I hope they don't saddle the kids with home work that would take the whole evening to complete.

I still do not understand why they give pupils lots of home work to do after spending so much time at school.

This new idea is a welcome development, in as much as the school is concerned any thing more than 8hrs in school is a scam...

Good one. Now do 100× of such good things, Soludo.

We also need the Federal Govt to ban Saturday and Sunday lectures in tertiary institutions.

Also bring the hammer down on banks insisting Saturdays as work days. Let People have time for themselves.

This Slaver's Bay Mode is counterproductive.

I don't know why Nigeria teacher's/lecture like to stress students brain.

Brain has limits, productive learning is not all about how long you do in-person learning.

Back then in the uni, lecturers will not come to class and be waiting till a week to exam to cage you in a class room the whole day for one particular course.

In nursery/primary, after school hours they will start prep/ overtime.

That was how they stressed our life back in the days.

A pry 3 pupil offering 14 subjects. School close by 2,lecture starts by 2.30 till 4.30. As u are going home, naso them dey park homework for u. Person go get little or no time to play, and the end ,the book nor still enter head.

This is a welcome development from the governor.

Parents get off from work at 4 or 5pm
So it serves them as nannies for their kids until closing
You’re causing a new kind of problem by banning it

Pls ban summer and holiday lesson too. Let your kids stare at your face if you've got nothing planned for them, not sending them back to what they are taking a break from.
