In my Secondary School and University WhatsApp groups,
I hardly Comment or make contributions. sad

I see them online talking about social media trends, Our School days, Visitations, etc and I always Wonder 'Do these Pple have Jobs and ambitions?'.

I talked to a Friend of mine About this and he said 'I am Anti-Social or an Introvert'. embarassed

But Really, I see those Alumni WhatsApp Groups as an Organization of Time Wasters. undecided

I thought I was the only one who saw these groups as a waste of time and phone space!

That's how I reluctantly joined my uni group until the admin's number started sending private scam messages. Though he said his phone was hacked but I didn't wait to confirm that as I took advantage of the incident to finally remove myself from the nonsense group. grin grin grin

Ogbeni ,Gbenu soun. Olofofo oshi na him you be.
What are you doing on Nairaland that u are coming here to bad mouth your alumni as time waster?
Did they force you to join the group?
You stay on a Whatsapp group, Them talk, you no wan talk.
Them contribute money, you no wan give.
You just Sidon for the group to constitute additional number without adding any value to the group.
Tomorrow now, when u are sick or need financial assistance, it is same group you or your family will run to and beg for assistance after you have come here to bad mouth the group as time wasters.
Exit the group that you are not adding any value to, and stop complaining here.

My own issue with such groups is hypocrisy and needless conversations. Some old schoolmates have their old mentality and you discover you're no longer on that level.

If we were truly friends, we'd have each other's contact. I don't believe in group nonsense.

Don't be too serious, fam. My secondary school year group Alumni WhatsApp group, the "accomplished" and "well-to-do" guys are the most active in the group. It is always very active at night when most people must have been back from work... This is a group we have top I.T guys, about 5 pilots (two practising in the U.S), doctors, Nurses, those into politics, military and paramilitary officers..Any field, just name it... Not everyone active in such groups is jobless and unemployed. Socialize and be open to opportunities. My first major contract was given to me by a secondary school classmates. Surprisingly, we weren't close while we were in school.

Just last year, a job ad was posted in group, I sent it to a relative, he was called for interview, immediately I reached out to the guy that sent it to the class group, immediately he asked for the name and number of my relative, he personally called my relative by himself and asked him some questions in regards to job, the interview was just like a formality because he was assured of the job

This is actually relative. A friend from my alumni gave me the link to my first major employment by just recommendation. Just this month, I got an international certification through one of my class mates, my class governor precisely. Last year, we were three(3) class mates whose wedding fell same month, to my surprise, they gifted us some items...

You must not always comment, you can be an observer and also try to ensure things work the right way. Don't forget, when the purpose of a thing isn't known, abuse is inevitable.

Just last year, I was at the Validatory Ceremony in the Nigerian Navy Academy, Ojo. The senior perfect in 2003 was appointed to represent the alumni for that year, he spoke, "I have been an architect for over 15yrs with a firm, proudly a Ph.d holder in my field of endeavor, but, my breakthrough came in 2020 during the Covid 19 lockdown. One of our class mates from our Alumni reach out to me from US, gave me a project, I executed it, that was the beginning of my success in this profession. I am now the architect to his family and associates"

Stay through to your alumni, there's more than meets the eyes

My alumni, they are only interested in contributing money for birthdays and burial ceremonies.

We are never good at harnessing the power of a group to achieve great success or solve a problem.

You are right , it was last year I spoke with few of my guys they open WhatsApp group started added member all of a sudden billing and self-exaltation started popping in because some had the opportunity to go to universities while others could not ,funeral announcement, birthday and wedding donation was all they know for me i diligently withdraw myself to avoid issues ..

Some people are only there for selfish interest ...
