Nelson Mandela was a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary, political leader, and philanthropist who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. Born on July 18, 1918, Mandela became actively involved in the anti-apartheid movement in his youth, eventually joining the African National Congress (ANC). He spent 27 years in prison for his activism, emerging as a global symbol of resistance against apartheid. After his release in 1990, Mandela negotiated an end to apartheid and became South Africa's first black president, focusing on reconciliation and nation-building.
