Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, has said it’s been “humbling” to find out through a genealogy test that she is partly Nigerian as she met with women in the West African nation Saturday.

According to Associated Press on Saturday, Meghan on her second day in Nigeria, where she is visiting for the first time with Prince Harry to promote mental health for wounded soldiers and young girls, acknowledged Nigeria as “my country.”

She said, “It’s been eye-opening to be able to know more about my heritage.”

“Never in a million years would I understand it as much as I do now. And what has been echoed so much in the past day is, ’Oh, we are not so surprised when we found out you are Nigerian,” she said at the event on women in leadership co-hosted by Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, a Nigerian economist and head of the World Trade Organization (WTO).

“It is a compliment to you because what they define as a Nigerian woman is brave, resilient, courageous, beautiful,” Meghan told the audience.

The Duchess of Sussex had announced on her podcast in October 2022 that she found out through the DNA-based test that she was “43% Nigerian.”

Her first reaction after finding out was to tell her mother, she said at the event in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja. “Being African American, part of it is really not knowing so much about your lineage and background … and it was exciting for both of us,” she said.

Mo Abudu, the anchor and chief executive of EbonyLife media group, then asked the audience to suggest a Nigerian name for Meghan.

“Ifeoma,” someone shouted from the excited crowd, a name from Nigeria’s Igbo tribe which means ‘a treasured thing.’ “Omowale” another suggested, from the Yoruba tribe, which means ‘the child has come home.’ and Edidiong which means ‘blessing’.

Meghan joined female industry leaders such as Okonjo-Iweala to discuss the importance of mentorship for young women and the career challenges women face in a country like Nigeria, where it is not common for women to be in top leadership and political positions.

Asked by the anchor about how she feels about becoming the first woman and first African to lead the WTO, Okonjo-Iweala said it was long overdue.

“When I will feel right is when we stop saying, ‘the first woman to do this … to do that’. I have very mixed feelings about being the first woman because I think women should have been there already.” She also spoke about mentors who have helped her career, including as Nigeria’s former finance minister.

One way to mentor young girls is by “returning home” to be closer to them, Meghan said, citing the case of Okonjo-Iweala as an example. “You need to come back home, you need to, at least, be a familiar face for the next generation to say, ‘Oh she looks like me and I can be that’,” she added.

Earlier in the day, Meghan watched Prince Harry’s Invictus Games team compete in a sitting volleyball match against the Nigerian military team, featuring soldiers recovering from injuries sustained in the country’s conflict. After the game, the couple met with players, their families, and a group of women who gifted Meghan a traditional Nigerian fabric.

“We are friends and family supporters of Harry and Meghan,” said Peace Adetoro, 57, a member of the group. “They are a beautiful couple and we love them so much. We support them 100%.”

Nothing can describe the love Nigeria has for her colonizer and enslaver. The love is too much. Till date we have refused to do away with even the stupid slave name these guys gave to us.

This big head normally should have been stoned and chased out of the country for the atrocities they committed against us.

How will you be honouring and celebrating the children of people who raped and sold our mothers, wives, and daughters? Their children should be scared of us.

I will never celebrate these people !
I will never practice their religion!
I will never give my children English names!

I still speak their language today because our foolish leaders have forced us to learn and speak the language of our enslavers by making it our national language.

Good for her.
The Prince and his wife Meghan have moved on with their lives and enjoying the life to social service unlike the aristocratic and arrogant life the family wanted for them.

OP and punch reporter are the bigots that created a topic of one (1) tribal name when she three (3) was actually suggested.

Unlike most other countries on earth, there's absolutely nothing that Nigerians will agree on, not even national team football. There'll always be division along ethnoreligious lines.

Please, you guys should leave the Igbo, even if the name was suggested by an Igbo. Try Yoruba or Hausa this time. You don't love the Igbo.

inferiority complex is affecting you, when she came visiting with her husband does she mentioned that she's coming to Biafra country? The three names were suggested from guests not that she claimed one herself I know you are bitter within you that you are not Yoruba.

Meghan's father is a White man and her mother is an African-American. Therefore Meghan is of mixed race descent. This info is for the few ignorant posters here who are trying to associate her with a particular ethnicity based on her caramel or light skin complexion.

Second, it depends on what 43 percent Nigerian ancestry means though. 23 and Me, and AncestryDNA are the major DNA testing companies that I've known for over 20 years now that assign percentages to their tests. These percentage tests however do NOT tell you what specific ethnic groups you come from but only broadly say you are from the Nigeria, Benin/Togo, Cameroon/Congo, Mali, Ghana/Ivory Coast Regions based on your genetic markers.

Many from what is now Nigeria were taken on slave schooners to the Americas in the 1700s and 1800s from among the Hausas (in Brazil, Haiti, U.S.A, etc), Yorubas (in Cuba, Brazil, U.S.A, Guyana, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela, etc), Nupes, Ibo, Efik/Ibibio (in Cuba), Kanuris (Slave ship records show that out of an estimated 99,752 "Liberated Africans," a population of over 700 Kanuris had been liberated at various times from slave ships by the British Royal Navy Squadrons patrolling off the Atlantic coast of West Africa in the 1800s and resettled in Freetown, Sierra Leone). These folks were MAJORLY captives from the Fulani jihad in the North of Nigeria as told by the Kanuri man Ali Eisami Gazirmabe who had an Islamic teacher father, and Ali Eisami [Eisami means "son of Aisha" in the Kanuri tradition] was captured around 1812/1813 and sold into slavery by the Fulani invaders of the Borno area.

The last ever infamous American slave ship (Clotilda) that sailed into the United States in 1859 from Whydah (now in Benin Republic) into Mobile in Alabama, United States on the eve of the American Civil War had majorly Yorubas from the Bante region of Yorubaland in the current Benin Republic and some captive long-distance traders from Yorubaland in Nigeria onboard, with some Nupes (Tapas), a Fon noble man, and a few Hausas, etc. Oluale Kosola (was onboard the infamous Clotilda, and renamed Kojo Lewis on arrival in Mobile, Alabama) and others built a settlement called Africatown in Alabama after the American Civil War ended in 1865, and all enslaved Africans in the Deep South were freed from plantation slavery. The Africatown descendants are still alive as of today in the United States with some holding prominent positions in entertainment and more.

Most African-Americans, Afro-South Americans and African-Carribeans, etc, are NOW ancestrally mixed up and based on DNA analyses, most show ancestries from all parts of the major regions and ethnic groups of Africa where enslaved Africans were taken from (and European ancestries as well) because of the forced intermingling of White men and African women who were enslaved on the plantations, then after slavery was abolished, there were legal marriages between Whites and Blacks as well.
